Deadline is reporting that Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore; Ballers; The Good Wife) has joined the cast of Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion in a role that sounds like it could have a big future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to the report, he's playing a newly created character for the series, and it's believed he could ultimately cross over into the films and the other upcoming Disney+ shows.
While plot details are still being kept under wraps, the series is expected to loosely adapt the popular crossover comic arc of the same name that reveals how the shape-shifting Skrulls managed to infiltrate the planet and have been manipulating events to their liking for decades.
McDonald joins an ensemble cast headlined by Academy Award-nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Spider-Man: Far From Home; Avengers: Endgame) as Nick Fury and Primetime Emmy-winner Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline; Captain Marvel) as Talos.
4x Primetime Emmy-nominee Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones; Solo: A Star Wars Story; Terminator: Genisys), Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman (The Father; The Favourite; Tyrannosaur), Kingsley Ben-Adir (The OA; Peaky Blinders; King Arthur: Legend of the Sword), and Killian Scott (Damnation; Dublin Murders; Love/Hate) were previously cast in lead roles.
Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot; Copper; Borgia) is serving as head writer on the project with Thomas Bezucha (Let Him Go; Monte Carlo) and Ali Selim (Sweet Land; The Looming Tower) set to co-direct.
With casting now fully underway, production on the six-episode miniseries is expected to begin sometime this fall in the United Kingdom and Europe, presumably with a mid-to-late 2022 debut in consideration.
