Fox's THE GIFTED Won't Ignore The X-MEN, Their Absence Is Actually A Big Part Of The Show

The trailer for The Gifted revealed that "the X-Men don't exist anymore" but that wasn't an indication that the show's shying away from the faculty at Charles Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters.

If you thought Fox's The Gifted was establishing right off the bat that the X-Men wouldn't be playing a prominent role in the series with the line in the Comic-Con trailer that the mighty mutants were gone, you interpreted it incorrectly- at least according to showrunner Matt Nix.

“In our world, one of the things we’ll be unpacking is the specific relationship of this group of characters to the X-Men. It’s in the trailer that the X-Men are gone. And that’s not a dodge, like ‘The X-Men are gone and we’re never going to mention them again! We’re going to be exploring it. It’s a huge deal to these guys. It’s a huge deal in the world. It’s one of the central mysteries of the show.

But how should fans interpret the statement above? Are the X-Men dead or just missing?  While the focus of the show appears to be this family that's on the run from Sentinels, will there be a subplot that deals with finding the missing X-Men?  We'll have to wait until the series premiere this fall on Fox for definitive answers.

It's X-Men-y enough. Chris Claremont used the false deaths of the X-Men as a maguffin numerous times, including bringing Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, etc into the book as the "new team".

@TheFamousJMC - Fun bit of trivia, Clarmont is the one who saved Captain Marvel from being scrapped for good. When they were considering pulling the plug on her in the early 80's, he's the one who saved her from that Avengers 200 debacle. Guy was a real crisis manager at the time.

@TheFamousJMC - Wouldn't Blink and Warpath know where the X-Men are, since, you know, they're X-Men themselves?

@Asturgis - Right. It's interesting how some writers had pet characters at that time (I guess it's the same now with Bendis and his love for Jess Drew)... but I was reading some old Namor comics by John Byrne, where he pulled both Namor and Iron Fist out of obscurity. And he developed She-Hulk from being a joke, to a full member of FF, Avengers, and then a solo series.

I heard that this is set pre Logan, so it takes place after the future ending of DoFP which makes sense since in Logan there were no more X-men.

@NinnesMBC - it would be cool if this took place in the Logan timeline where all but Wolverine, Professor X, and Caliban are wiped out.

@NinnesMBC - I assumed it takes place in the original timeline between The Wolverine and the Bad Senitnel Future of DoFP.
Thus, it shows the beginning of mutants being hunted and the rise of the sentinels.
That would explain the absences of the xmen, as they are in hiding which we see in DoFP.

The only evidence I have is Blink and Warpath being present and being younger that their DoFP appearances. Blink looks exactly like the movie version (both in look and power representation).

Again, I could be wrong. But I think it is a great way to connect to the films series but not being restrained by them like AoS often is.

@ConnorHawkeye - Just curious. Other than the netflix shows, what marvel shows are there? The only one I can think of is AOS. Am I missing some?
