THE GIFTED: Here's What Happened To The X-Men And Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants In The TV Series

The Gifted appears to be set in a world of its own but it is one where the X-Men and Brotherhood of Evil Mutants once called home. So, what's the explanation for their absence in the upcoming series?

"The X-Men are gone," says The Gifted showrunner Matt Nix in a new interview, confirming that the heroes were part of this world in the not too distant past. The team's role has been something we've all been wondering about for a while now and it turns out that the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants also existed before the events of the premiere so why are all these famous mutants M.I.A. from The Gifted?

Well, the obvious answer is because Fox doesn't wish to muddy the waters between their big and small screen X-Men related offerings but it turns out that there's a story reason of sorts for their absence.

"Most of the powerful classic mutants are not around. People don’t know where they’ve gone. They are shrouded in mystery. It comes out gradually over the course of the series that there’s been a cataclysmic event, a bit of a 9/11 event, that caused enormous social upheaval and a lot of hatred towards mutants. It’s somehow related to the disappearance of the X-Men and the Brotherhood."

While there's no denying that the premise of The Gifted is interesting, this vague explanation for why the X-Men and Brotherhood are nowhere to be seen is eye-roll worthy when we all know that it boils down to Fox wanting to keep its mutant related projects separate. It's sort of like all the vague Batman references we get in The CW's DC TV shows when it's clear that he'll never really show up in them!

What do you guys think? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

@TheLight - But didn't Logan introduce the fact that the X-Men are gone? I'm not up to speed with the Fox X-Men universe.

@Nightwing1015 - They did but there isn't an exact year that this series is taking place.

Ridiculous plot and explanation!

If Marvel´s Inhumans is bad, THE GIFTED mark a much lower level for superhero TV Shows. Absolutely decadent

@TheLight - REAL translation: "It's not an X-men story but what happens is an important part of the show. For specifics, you'll just need to watch it".

Or do you think shows should give us every detail prior to premiering?

Singer has the possibility to create a kind of universe similar to Arrow, there is much material, as long as it is separated from the movies

The way I see it something makes the X-Men and Brotherhood retreat from the world after/between the events of X-Men Dark Phoenix (whatever happens it is will probably bring a big change) and basically disappear up until the new timeline version of the original X-Men trilogy, cause in that first movie mutants aren't really common knowledge I guess. Obviously bit of a stretch but attempting to fill the blanks with something.

@Gigacrusher45 - From what I understand this takes place in it's own continuity. Could be wrong though.

So they want to capitalize on the X-Men name without having to actually show them. Got it.

Fox-Men are dead ??? I like this show already

My own belief is that this takes place in the orginal timeline (between the Wolverine and the evil Senitnel future). That would explain the absences of the Xmen and the brotherhood (as we know magneto joins them)
It also explains the rise of the sentinels and what seems to be the routine capturing of mutants.
I think it's a great way to go. That way it is in the film universe yet isn't restricted in story as the timeline is eventually replaced by DoFP thus new films (deadpool 2, new mutants etc don't put any restrictions on we're they can go).

I'll give it a chance, like with all CBTV shows, but so far I don't see me staying on for very long. Blink and Polaris seem cool, and I'm happy Amy Acker got a leading role, but aside from that nothing about this gave me any "you need to watch this" vibes.

If they can expand on what happened in Logan it may make for some interesting fill in the blanks moments

Obviously space travel to the empire is only months for our Xmen heroes but years pass on earth.
Duh.

That mystery wasn't eye roll worthy in the Deadpool movie. It wasn't eye roll worthy in Legion.
Know what is eye roll worthy? This article's silly opinion.
It's called mystery, and it's what makes plots strong.

That mystery wasn't eye roll worthy in the Deadpool movie.

That "mystery" wasn't exactly a mystery in Deadpool, though, it was a joke. The movie itself was rolling its eyes there.
