WANDAVISION Director Matt Shakman Describes "Mad Sprint" To Finish Series Before January 15 Premiere

WandaVision director Matt Shakman has opened up about the rush to get the Disney+ series finished before its January 15 premiere, while also explaining the challenges of working in the midst of a pandemic!

WandaVision was originally expected to hit Disney+ in December, so its January 15 premiere is nowhere near as noteworthy a delay as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier's. The Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan-led series was scheduled for an August 2020 debut before being pushed down the Phase 4 release slate to this March.

Talking to SFX Magazine, WandaVision director Matt Shakman admitted that dealing with the pandemic made finishing the show in time for its debut particularly challenging.

"We wrapped with very little time before the show has to air, so it’s going to be a mad sprint to the finish line, even more so than many [Marvel Studios] films have had," he explains. "The fact that we did have that post-process in the middle allowed us to finish up quicker than maybe we would have if we had just shot straight through and then just started post."

With work halted on WandaVision for six months, Shakman says his team was forced to go into "all stages of the [production] process" simultaneously. "It’s an interesting thing for a director, as I found it’s been a bit schizophrenic to be in all stages of the process. We’re literally doing every step of the process at the same time."

It's clearly not been easy to get WandaVision where it needs to be by next Friday, but there's not a chance Marvel Studios would put the series out there without it being in tip-top shape.

Really looking forward to finally being able to see the first MCU TV show next week, but even more to seeing the first reviews to see if this show will be as well received as the Marvel Netflix shows or better.

@John456 - Even in the midst of baiting, you're inaccurate; Agent Carter would be the undisputable first by your standards.

@EskimoJ - How would Agent Carter be the first? Just like Agents Of Shield both of those were done by Marvel Television studios. These Disney+ shows are the first Marvel shows to actually have Disney & Kevin Feige involved with them.

Marvel Studios has no reason to make sure this was out the door sooner than it should be. The sheer fact that it's now coming out before Black Widow tells us that. So I'm sure there's more context to this than simply rushing it to meet a deadline.

If this show feels rushed its going to suck.
