WHAT IF...? Creative Team Reveals How Captain Carter Was Able To Wield Infinity Stones In Season 2 Finale

Captain Carter's ability to wield the Infinity Stones in What If...? season 2's finale has proven to be predictably divisive, but the animated show's creative team has now cleared up some of the confusion.

In What If...?'s season 2 finale, Captain Carter and Kahhori teamed up to battle Strange Supreme. The twisted Sorcerer had kidnapped countless Variants he considered universe killers (and saviours) to feed into a machine which could recreate the reality he destroyed and, crucially, bring back Christine Palmer.

During the battle, Kahhori was able to wield Mjolnir and Captain Carter got her hands on all six Infinity Stones - along with various other MCU artefacts such as Hela's crown - in a bid to take Strange down.

Inevitably, there are those on social media unhappy with Peggy Carter wielding the Infinity Stones when doing so killed Thanos and Tony Stark. The usual "woke" complaints are plentiful and there are those who believe this is some sort of pothole or lazy storytelling.

Well, in an interview with Phase Zero (via Toonado.com), What If...? director Bryan Andrews responded to the questions surrounding Cap's ability to use the Stones.

"It's with Kahhori's help, so you have to freeze-frame it and take a look," he said. "When Kahhori sends those stones to her, they're surrounded in Kahhori's power. There's a layer of space stone energy that's shielding it from ultimate death, so, basically, [it's] kind of like the protective covering when you buy a new record, for those people that still buy records...the plastic sheen around the vinyl, or whatever, if you will."

"But, you see it a little bit, you see it when they fly up towards her, and then when her hand's out, and you get the close-up of them reaching in, there's that faint blue glow around each of the stones," Andrews continued. "She has, basically, just like a little protective glove so she won't immediately die."

It's an explanation which makes sense and the episode's writer, Matt Chauncey, later chimed in to add, "Earlier on, if you look, when she has the armor on, she's never actually using all of the stones at once. Only a couple are lighting up, if you're paying attention, so you never see actually see her doing the 'all four activated' thing that proved painful to some of our other characters in the live-action movies."

With that, this apparent plot hole has been addressed, though it will likely do little to end the complaints about Captain Carter becoming (albeit briefly) the MCU's most powerful superhero.

Captain Carter and Kahhori are both expected to be central figures in season 3 of What If...?, likely as part of a new team of heroes assembled by The Watcher.

All episodes of What If...? season 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney+.

Much as I loved the visuals and music of the finale, they made both Carter and Kahhori inexplicably OP. I mean, even before the topic in question here, she's just portaling Erik out of his Infinity Ultron suit? Come on!

Yes, the same power that wasn't even able to hold off cannonball fire is now suddenly capable of containing the power of the infinity stones 🙄

She’s not that bright. She sees Killmonger snap Thanos away yet she doesn’t do that to Strange.

How did Kahhori know what the infinity stones are?
I call BS!

@S8R8M - Erm, for one thing she got her powers from an infinity stone but we also do not know what adventures she got upto and what info she could thus have gained between her sending the Spanish packing in the first fight after gaining powers and when she encounters Peggy. It is only an assumption she went straight off with Sinister Strange to supers jail when he may have used her to help capture a villain first such as one with a full set of the stones.

@Apophis71 - So the next time you see glowing water. You are going to know it is a infinity stone and jump straight in. Then speak all languages modernly?

Thanks for another spoiler in the headline, Josh.

Last episode I've watched so far was the "Pocahontas with powers" one, and it was terrible, like most of the previous ones, hope the next episodes are better.

“It’s not lazy writing” then tells us it’s the special blue glow that allowed it. Lol we call that lazy writing

@Winston19 - I legit just though kahori was floating it to her. Nothing about this indicated she was doing anything special to protect peggy.

It never fails to amaze, confuse and amuse me when fans of a literary and visual genre predicated entirely on the suspension of disbelief, lose their wigs when a story steps outside of the 'rules' or even worse changes a costume. When will they understand that they represent only a small fraction of the total audience. Gender swapping is the agenda driven, notable exception but otherwise, anything can and will be changed to service the story, improve the aesthetic and make it ENTERTAINING. Fanboys and girls, this is not made for you, nor should it be.

I did find that strange that she could wield the infinity stones but Tony couldn’t. I’d rather than use the excuse that infinity stones are different universe to universe. Kinda like the explanation for why Gamora’s stone destroyer didn’t work in season 1.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/9/2024, 8:13 PM
@slickrickdesigns - I guess you could argue Tony only couldn't use them all at once to do the snap and maybe could have used one or two at a time with his full tech glove instead of the simpler looking nanotech one...

...but also Tony is ONLY human sans ANY enhancements thus not impossible Cap could have used the guantlet full of stones using at max only a few at a time but never the full powers by using them all at once without serious harm.

When it comes to all the nonsensical, clueless, pointless stories and plot holes in Marvel Comedic Universe, it all happens just because.......

Just as I suspected it, knew I wasn't the only one that noticed it. Makes sense the power of an Infinity Stone like the Space One that now is in Kahhori was able to protect Captain Carter.

This comment section behaved as expected, full of whining. "Mary Sue", you all are pathetic even when you get the explanation from the writers.

Or ya'll just insecure dimwits. Pick your poison in any case.

So when killmonger wore the suit, no issue, but a woman does it and everyone loses their mind
