It sounds like David Fincher (MankMindhunter) has found his next project, and it's bringing him back to Netflix.

According to multiple sources, the 2x Academy Award-nominated director will be returning to the streaming giant for The Killer, an adaptation of Alexis Nolent and Luc Jacamon's French noir graphic novel of the same name which follows a cold-blooded assassin who begins to develop a conscience, causing him to emotionally crack.

The move will reunite Fincher with screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker for the first time in nearly twenty-five years. The duo previously collaborated on Se7enThe Game, and Fight Club, with Walker writing the screenplay for the former and serving as an uncredited script doctor on the latter two.

The project has been in development for well over a decade and was originally set up at Paramount as a potential Brad Pitt (Bullet TrainOnce Upon a Time... In Hollywood) vehicle, but with Netflix recently acquiring the rights, the film is now circling 2x Academy Award-nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class; X-Men: Days of Future Past) to star in the lead role.

Unlike the six-year gap between his last two film projects, Gone Girl and Mank, production on The Killer is expected to move forward relatively quickly, with Fincher reportedly planning on beginning principal photography in September.

Rewatched Gone Girl this past weekend for the first time in years. Such a great flick.

Hyped for this movie.

@regularmovieguy - I know Pike (rightly) gets a lot of praise for that film, but Affleck, Carrie Coon and Perry were all great too. Affleck especially - a really nuanced performance, maybe his best work.

@tmp3

Been meaning to watch that interview for a minute now.

And you’re right. Everyone in that movie is perfectly cast. Missi Pyle had me rolling as her Nancy Grace-type opinionist. That was also my first time seeing Carrie Coon perform and she absolutely left an impression. Tyler Perry, too!

I feel like the people that were posting their excitement over Fincher working with Fassbender kind of dropped the lede here when Andrew Kevin Walker is involved in the project.

Damn you David Fincher, why do you keep picking interesting projects with some of my favorite actors...just do Mindhunter season 3 or atleast a netflix film to wrap the series up.

@CurlyBill - it’s a shame he said there won’t be any kind of continuation.

Maybe some years later he will revisit the idea

Fassbender seems like the perfect leading man for Fincher, holy shit. Also, dude's finally signing onto promising projects again - his run from 2009 to 2015 was untouchable

@tmp3 - I HATED him in 12 Years A Slave. How good he was.

I wanted to stomp that character.

@BlackBeltJones - The fact that that probably isn't a top 3 performance for Fassbender really speaks volumes. No idea why he decided to do nothing but shitty movies since 2016, but nice to see him back lol

I would’ve taken Mindhunter season 3 over anything else. But it’s Fassbender and The Ge (so underrated) and Se7ven scribe so I’m in.

I'm excited for anything Fincher makes, even though I wasn't high on Mank.

Side note, Fincher would KILL a Hannibal Lector movie

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - agreed, that scene where Gyllenhaal's character is in the basement was pretty intense
