EXTRACTION Rakes In Netflix's Biggest Film Premiere Of All Time

Netflix is reporting that Extraction, starring Thor: Love and Thunder's Chris Hemsworth, is breaking records for the streaming platform, taking the coveted spot from Michael Bay's 6 Underground.

In this time of social distancing, Netflix has been on a roll. With its value at an all-time high, and millions bingeing shows at home, it's no surprise that Extraction is doing fantastic numbers for the streaming service.

The actioner, which stars Marvel Cinematic Universe alum Chris Hemsworth, with the backing of the Russo brothers and Avengers: Endgame stuntman Sam Hargrave, has gotten positive responses from critics and audiences. And to top it all off, the film is now projected for the biggest Netflix film premiere of all time.

Reported by the service itself, Extraction is breaking records with an estimated 90 million households tuning in during its first four weeks. It overtakes the Ryan Reynolds-actioner 6 Underground, whose previous record was 83 million in viewership during the same duration.

So what does this mean for the film? Will the Russos be motivated to develop a sequel? Only time will tell, but until then, director Sam Hargrave and star Chris Hemsworth have proved themselves bonafide talents outside of the MCU, providing some of the best action sequences in film since John Wick: Chapter 3. (That 12-minute oner is undeniably 2020's best action sequence.)

Let's hope studios all around Hollywood take note. Extraction is now streaming on Netflix.

I wonder what those numbers would be if everybody wasn’t stuck at home.

@santoanderson -

Lower but probably still comparable to what 6 Underground made I imagine?

@Humperdink - well, 6 underground had 83 million views in December. I'm sure it would stay #1 if things are normal now.

Maybe Thor Wick could be getting his own franchise too.

Well I haven't seen all Netflix films but it was definitely one of the best I ever seen. Outstanding in every way.

Hope it doesn’t do TOO well now, can’t have Hemsworth thinking he doesn’t need Thor.

Film was solid. Action was terrific. Wouldn't mind more films from that world.

Watched it the other night. Amazing action, choreography, everything else was mediocre tbh.

It was a fun little movie with some kick-ass choreography. I wasn't a fan of the predictable ending or how the cinematography made everything look like a videogame. I'd watch a sequel but I hope someone else directs it.

Netflix reporting always seems fraudulent to me. Don't they count a movie "seen" if someone clicked on the play button and left it on for 2 seconds or something?

These numbers are all so fishy.

Shit movies do well at Netflix. I'm shocked.

I thought it was okay at best. Certainly doesn't deserve the praise it's getting in the echo chamber here.

@L0RDbuckethead - story was bare bones, to be expected but the action was top notch

@L0RDbuckethead - it was largely standard Netflix quality to me I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it much if I had paid to see it in theaters unless I saw it through Regal Unlimited but I will say as someone who has an interest in making filmmaking a profession I was really impressed with the oneshot scene from a technical perspective at the very least to say it worth watching. I caught a lot of the cuts and camera tricks but even how they slide from beside the car into the back seat is just an amazing use of camera work, editing, and effects to make it as seemless as it is

Really good action movie. Felt like an 80's flick but with updated choreography.

Could have been better if whole movie was in English audio

@dragon316 - why would a movie set in India with a majority Indian cast have all English audio....

It was a really good movie, it still woulda had high ratings regardless.. maybe not 90 million, but pretty close.. is Hemsworth still gonna play HULK HOGAN in that Netflix biopic?

I’ve always wondered (and especially more so now that streaming service releases are a lot more of an option now) how do Netflix movies make money? I mean I don’t think they do in the traditional sense but like what the return on investment there? If you go into a movie studio with a script they want to know what you’ve done before and how much money it made as has been said by creatives in the past. So how do you count this? Is it like Youtube where there’s a set dollar amount per view and then your streams basically act as your gross? Is Netflix basically just eating the cost of these productions like they do with their originals to try to kill the competition or at studios footing the bill and then selling them to Netflix or both? I’m curious how Sam Hargrave gets his next gig and how he answers “How much money did it make” to the next studio exec he has to pitch to

I’m aware I’m in the minority, but I found the film pretty boring. The action and choreography was fantastic, and I love how smooth it all felt. The performances were also surprisingly really strong. Everything else, especially the story and characters, just felt like a first draft to me.
I got early 2000s action film nostalgia from the movie.

The director is still someone I will keep an eye out for, and I’d still watch a sequel. The success isn’t shocking in the slightest

Good solid action film, enjoyed it a lot with the wife. I'd give it an 8/10.
*spoiler* felt sorry for Saju who was a pretty badass character.

I actually needed to google if The Raid's choreographers were assigned to do this film. They weren't, but the styles are so alike.

Deserves it as it is miles better than 6 Underground. Extraction might have a thin script, but thanks to the well directed action and characters it was a pretty solid, enjoyable movie

SPOILERY QUESTION AHESD, so scroll on if you haven't seen it OK?

When the kid surfaces from his swimming pool in the final scene, there is a single slightly blurry figure standing in the background.

BIG SPOILER NEXT

Was that a Nolan style, did Tyler actually die tease?

@NicholiB - I think both Sam Hargrave and Joe Russo said it is intentionally left ambiguous so that the viewer can make up their own mind about it. If you ask me, the underwater meditation and the quote Avi tells Rake are some pretty smart set-ups to draw a final conclusion from

One of if not the best Netflix movie I’ve seen. The part where he fights the kids was hilarious and reminded me of....
