Extraction was a huge hit for Netflix, so it surprised no one when a sequel was confirmed (which is set to bring Chris Hemsworth back as heroic mercenary Tyler Rake). Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo is penning the screenplay, and the plan right now is for shooting to begin sometime in 2021.

During CCXP this weekend, Russo talked about the future of the franchise, confirming he and brother Anthony are in the process of developing what sounds like the "Extraction Cinematic Universe."

"I'm still not gonna commit because I think it’s more exciting to surprise people, but I will say this: we are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters," Joe told Collider. "So if you’re interested in David Harbour’s character, you just may get to see him in a future Extraction movie."

Harbour played Gaspar, one of Rake's former teammates. However, he turned on Hemsworth's character and was ultimately killed off; that doesn't mean he couldn't show up in a prequel, though!

Joe later added: "I think what makes that a compelling element to the Extraction universe is it is a global franchise telling global stories, and we’d like to diversify the point of view in those movies." In other words, it sounds like we can expect the Extraction franchise to embrace diversity both behind and in front of the camera, an exciting prospect for an action property such as this.

We'll keep you guys updated as we learn more.

Let's just see first of the sequel does good. I thought we were past the phase in the movie industry where everything has to be a shared universe

I just read an interview where the Russos said the same thing about their new film with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, that it could expand into a "universe" as well...

I hope that's not their mindset going into any/every new action project like this. Love 'em, but not everything can grow into its own MCU.

Why are they making a cinematic universe out of a mediocre action movie,
