JUPITER'S LEGACY: New Details On The Show's Premature Cancellation Have Come To Light

Following the recent announcement that Jupiter's Legacy will be a "one and done" on Netflix, more details on the show's premature cancellation have come to light. Find out what went down right here...

Netflix recently announced that Jupiter's Legacy would not be returning for a second season, with the cast, led by Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb and Ben Daniels, released from their commitments and free to pursue other projects. We were told that Netflix and Mark Millar simply went in a different creative direction, but more specific details have now come to light.

The bloody adaptation of Millar's comic series received mixed reviews from critics (and evidently didn't go over particularly well with viewers), but THR reports that the series was "plagued with issues from the start."

It sounds like the budget was a major factor, with then-showrunner Steven DeKnight reportedly telling Netflix that each episode would cost at least $12 million. The streamer backed him down to $9 million, and when the production started to run into problems, DeKnight was replaced by Sang Kyu Kim (The Walking Dead), who then had to "retool the first batch of episodes."

Ultimately, costs began to surge beyond even what DeKnight originally asked for (it seems he was proven right), and insiders believe the final budget of the season to be "upwards of $200 million." Louis Leterrier (Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Lupin) is said to have been brought on as a consultant to see if he could salvage the show, but by then it was too late.

It'd be easy to assume that bad metrics played a part in the cancellation, but Nielsen showed that Jupiter's Legacy topped its streaming chart, generating 696 million minutes of view time in the week of May 3-9, so people were seemingly tuning in. Unfortunately, we won't get a proper read on viewership unless Netflix decides to release the figures (not gonna happen).

A live-action Supercrooks series is in development, however, and Netflix insists that it's still "invested in Millarworld for the long haul."

Some parts of the show looked cheap so I wonder where the money went. Superman & Lois is superior but I very much doubt their budget is anywhere near 200 million.

I’m sure that there are Netflix shows that actually show the money on screen but this one didn’t.

Compare any original series from HBO Max or Disney+ and the difference is evident. Netflix series and movies look cheap.

All that money and it still looked cash-poor, visually.

Am I the only one that enjoyed the show? I mean, it was far from perfect, but I was mostly invested in all the characters and wanted to see how things turned out. Maybe it's because I never read the comic and didn't know what was coming.

@RorMachine - it wasn't that bad, but it was too slow imo. The main plot could be done in 3 episodes (spoiler alert: that is, the bad guy is killed, they probe his brain, and all the stuff like the funeral for the other dead heroes happens in the middle). However they stretched that over 8 episodes, and it didn't help that the stuff in the past looked way more interesting and some episodes felt like filler (like the introduction of hutch, cool character but in the grand scheme of things he doesn't really do anything worth mentioning in the first season). It felt more like a trailer for future seasons, but failed to be entertaining enough to make sure people would actually return.

@RorMachine - i liked it. It was good to have on as I was working. I didn't need something that totally grabbed my attention the whole time. That's damning praise of course.

I think it just missed that x-factor that pushed the show out of the norm.

@RorMachine - I'm actually enjoying it right now but there's just too much stuff out now or time people have to watch something.
But it's not a bad show & did not get a chance to read the comics either to compare.

Where did that 200 million go? This looked like a slight step up from most Arrowverse shows.

@MrDandy - Worst looking fake beard ever in the first scene when the supermanesque protagonist meets his kids when they were little and were playing in a park or something like that.

The rest of the wigs, make up and vfx looked really cheap and bad, mostly worse than anything in the Arrowverse.

Moral of the story: Never get invested in Netflix shows. Also, bring back all the seasons of Power Rangers.

@RitoRevolto - Right? If Netflix is streaming the new series of Power Rangers, why not bring back all of the season of Power Rangers.

The budget got that high and the show somehow still looked that CHEAP. Wonder where the money went.

Shows that have their production go awry do tend to cost more due to extended time for the crew and actors spent on set.
You might not see the increased budget but it's certainly there

This show in no way cost 200 million and I bet this website will have a separate article poi tin out the inflation in the coming weeks. The thing many haven't considered is that maybe it doesn't deserve more episodes. Maybe the source universe just isn't interesting enough to bother. This show was arrow/flash bad

@Hulkh8liars - IMO the source universe is horrible. This is the real problem. Bad production values are just an easy target. The Millarworld comics are just not that good.

So DeKnight starts the show and Netflix thinks it’s costing too much…They make DeKnight cut back to save money on budget…Work continues with the cut in costs…

Netflix doesn’t like where the show is going after DeKnight cut costs at their request…So they replace DeKnight with Kyu Kim…

The budget to fix the show under Kyu Kim balloons past what DeKnight was originally spending causing Netflix to push through the first season then write the whole thing off…

Sounds like Netflix should’ve outlined a budget from the start and stuck with it…They ended up costing themselves even more money by initially trying to save money 🤷‍♂️…Also makes sense why a $200 million+ show looks like something you’d watch at 1:30am on the SyFy channel…

I’d love to see a cost total they spent “fixing” the damn thing after first cutting the budget to the point that it looked horrible…They spent a ton of money to fix a show they short changed to save money on…Can’t make this stuff up 😂…
