JUPITER'S LEGACY Star Josh Duhamel On Why He Was So Disappointed When The Show Was Cancelled

Josh Duhamel has already commented on Netflix's decision not to move forward with a second season of Jupiter's Legacy, but the actor has now elaborated on why he was so disappointed about the cancellation.

Following the recent announcement that Jupiter's Legacy will not be returning for a second season on Netflix, several members of the cast took to social media to share their reactions.

Lead Josh Duhamel (The Utopian) previously weighed in with a facetious Instagram post about being "dumped by Netflix" and having to "put himself back out there," but the Transformers actor has now elaborated on why he was so disappointed about the cancellation.

"You know, it’s just disappointing, I’m not gonna lie," Duhamel tells CinemaBlend. "We all worked very hard on that and promoted it very hard and thought we made a really good show, and I think [with] the audience, it performs so well and continues to do really well. We were a little bit surprised by it not getting renewed. For me, I never saw it going more than two or three seasons because that would have fulfilled whatever graphic novels were written for it. And that second season was going to be so much fun because it had the makings of this modern tragedy where some pretty dark stuff happens to The Utopian. And I was excited creatively to do that."

"I’m not sure the reasoning for it. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have done it, and I think we all did a really good job on it. But this is the way of the business, you take your lumps. Just because you got something great, it can be undone. You have to kind of roll with it. It’s disappointing."

Though writer/EP Millar maintains that the door is open for the show to return down the line, he has now turned his attention to a live-action Supercrooks series which will be set in the same universe. While this would potentially allow for characters from Season 1 of Jupiter's Legacy to appear, it's yet to be confirmed if that's on the cards.

Duhamel hasn't completely given up on the prospect of playing The Utopian again, but doesn't believe it's likely to happen. If he was given the opportunity to return to finish the character's arc, however, he fells a feature-length follow up would be the way to go.

"I don’t know if we’re ever going to see him again. Though it sure would have been fun to do that second season. I think they should do a feature, just encapsulating what would have happened in the second season. Not do the full season, but just a feature... I don’t know if they’ll do it or not, but all those costumes are ready to go. And they weren’t cheap, I’ll tell you that much."

What do you guys think? Did Netflix give up on Jupiter's Legacy prematurely, or had you lost interest before the season (now series) finale? Drop us a comment down below.

Hair and makeup was really trippin when they sent this out to be filmed. 😵‍💫

@Humperdink -

I think for me the hair and makeup was so awkward looking on a lot of the characters that it ended up being distracting in a story that was already hard to pay attention to.

So while I'm struggling to cruise through those very rough episodes I keep hitting potholes that take me all the way out.

This looks like decent cosplay but for a very expensive series? This can't be the best they could do.

I mean, I wasn't impressed by the show and barely made it through episode. BUT. That doesn't mean thousands of others didn't enjoy the show. It sucks for them and the cast because Netflix really ruined this themselves.

@RitoRevolto - Netflix os so weird. They seem so quick to cancel shows, and I'm not sure I understand why.

I thought this show sucked and looked silly. But I know it was fairly popular.

@RitoRevolto - The premier numbers were actually 1 of the highest for an original IP during the weekend it premiered. Jupiter's Legacy like Swamp Thing got cancelled due to a [frick] up in the finances and producer drama with the showrunner. The poor reviews didn't help it either despite the high viewership.

@CorndogBurglar - They have so many shows it stands to reason they'd have more cancellations compared to anyone else. But most of those cancellations mostly happen because they don't advertise their freaking shows unless it's Stranger Things, House of Cards, and some other one I'm forgetting.

@mastakilla39 - Yeah, just seems like a lot of that could've been easily avoided. Either way, this is why I don't get too caught up in the hype of any one Netflix series anymore.

@CorndogBurglar - There's some good articles going into depth as to why Netflix cancels shows so quickly - even some of their most popular ones.

Here's some basics:
1) Unlike most other services and channels, Netflix fully finances all projects. They add a bumper in there for each season. So basically season 2 costs something like 20% more, season 3 another 20% more and so on. Every new season means more costs.
2) Netflix has relatively fixed profits since people rarely cancel, so unless a show is bringing in new subscriptions, they don't want to be paying those bumpers each season. So unless something is Stranger Things popular, they won't pay for it.

What is means is that they are left with what @RitoRevolto - Netflix is in the quantity game, not quality. They want a high volume of shows because 10 seasons of Ozark doesn't help them get any more new subscriptions than 3 (you can substitute Ozark with really anything not named Stranger Things). We can get into all sorts of reasons why this might not be a winning strategy long-term, but it's their business model.

This also speaks to their likely issue here. Approving the original budget would mean also approving these bumpers. In that respect they'd rather approve overages, but that of course messed up the entire production. Ironically, their whole process might have ruined their chance at another Stranger Things (not likely, but it still could have happened). That's my guess to this mess. Curious what other creators might be thinking watching this.

The first season jumped around way too much for me to actually care about any of the characters, but I still would've watched a second season just to see how it got wrapped up.

Keep it SIMPLE! First it was just stupid, Second the constant flip flopping was extremely annoying.

The show had potential, and didn't completely suck, but the money that went into producing it for the response it got and still getting isn't worth moving forward on a s2. the viewership/audience he's talking about was there, but based on those same viewers and stats, they'll be unlikely to watch a second season even if it was Greenlit. Netflix can probably still squeeze some juice out of Jupiter's Legacy if they tried to do an animated follow up in the vain of Invincible.

Miller still got his payday though. Hopefully supercrooks is better.

I'm still waiting on that true kingsmans pt3

I thought the first episode was fantastic, but it meandered around after that. Too many dialogue scenes, too few action scenes.

Plus it felt too derivative of Invincible and The Boys.

This show was ok at best… don’t get me wrong, it was probably better than almost all the CW dc shows. But they dragged out a story that felt like it could’ve been tied up in half the season on the second half of the first season could’ve lead more into the actual betrayal of the leader super brothers.

They went way over their budget and still managed to produce a cheap looking product. Shame. I enjoyed to varying degrees.

Now that Netflix saved money on this train wreck of a show - let's be honest - it sucked - the pacing, the makeup (especially the guy in the wheelchair) , the back and forth , the dialogue , even the sound

but as I continue , now that Netflix saved money on this show they need to go back and give The Get Down a proper send off - talk about leaving audiences high and dry .... geeez
