Netflix Is Hoping To Find Its Own Family Friendly Franchise Similar To STAR WARS Or HARRY POTTER

Netflix continues attracting A-List talent to the streaming service, but it's now been revealed that they're keen to launch a family friendly franchise similar to Harry Potter, Star Wars, or Jumanji.

In recent months, Netflix has found great success with titles like The Irishman, Extraction, and The Old Guard, while their recent deal with the Russo Brothers to bring The Gray Man to the streaming service looks set to launch a brand new franchise with A-Listers like Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tendo Nagenda, the vice president of original films, explained that Netflix is now looking for a family friendly franchise of some sort.

"We're looking at big, broad-audience, PG-level adventure films as something that we want to get into," Nagenda explained. "Something along the lines of the first Star Wars, or Harry Potter 1 and 2. A lot of family live action, fantasy, spectacle movies that we think are big and can play great. A Jumanji-type of story. That is the next frontier."

Asked if he believes that will put Netflix into even greater competition with regular movie studios, he responded: "Well, we look at it as what aren't the studios focused on. New ideas. We want to encourage great talent to think that way. George Lucas created Star Wars — it wasn't based on a book. If you have that kind of imagination - like the Wachowskis with The Matrix - we feel like we're the place to take the chance on those types of innovative ideas and filmmakers."

Creating an original property like the one Nagenda is talking about is no easy feat, and Netflix could be better off adapting a pre-existing franchise of some sort. Whatever the case may be, the streamer has big ambitions, and it's going to be interesting seeing what comes of these plans.

@JustALurker - yeah the movies were fun, too bad they didnt get to complete the series. Hopefully the show happens so they can adapt the rest, like seriously even the BBC stopped their tv series early, but they did do 1 more book than the movies

Netflix is such an odd beast. Their original series are often fantastic, like Stranger Things, Umbrella Academy and Ozark etc. But I can’t recall a single really good original movie from them. Hell, they had Scorsese make a film with DeNiro and Pacino and it still amounted to ‘eh’ for me. All these films and they haven’t got a great one yet, let alone a classic. A lot of time killer fun films that are neither good nor bad, like Old Guard and Extraction. Just wish they made more films in the vein of Blumhouse or A24.

They should get the rights to Eragon and re-do it. I'm not really a fan, as it comes dangerously close to being a ripoff of The Lord of the Rings, but it was really popular in its heyday.

@JermareCBM - it’s more of an amalgamation of the plot of Star Wars in the world of Lord of the Rings with Jedi replaces with the Dragon Riders of Pern and the force replaced with the magic from Wizard of Earthsea

Very unoriginal and pulling from many sources, but still hugely entertaining to see them thrown together and impressive considering a 17 year old wrote it. Unfortunately the series completely falls apart in the last two books

Its a shame Apple TV+ prime (or whatever Apple's service is called) already has the rights to the Foundation novels, because that could be a pretty cool saga of movies, even if it isn't an original project

An adaptation of The Kingkiller Chronicles would be insane. If only Patrick Rothfuss would write another [frick]ing book!! Fair dinkum, he’s even worse than George RR Martin.

@Tasmaniac - I've read Rothfuss has mental health issues, anxiety and the like, and that's why he isn't writing

@Tasmaniac - fantastic series but not really middle-grade like they’re looking for. Also it will undoubtedly run into the same problem as Game of Thrones due to the authors writing speed

@Polaris - That’s a shame if it’s true. Still, he spends a hell of a lot of time on other projects: Comics, conventions etc and (not to sound like an arsehole) a lot of time on his charity foundation World Builders. Sort of everything but the books.

@MrDandy - Probably true on both parts. They’re sort of like Harry Potter for grown ups.

I'm sure plenty of families watch Stranger Things together, even tho I wouldn't call it a family show. That basically is their "Harry Potter" or "Star Wars"
