It appears that the spin-off to the CW's new "hit" show "Riverdale" has been given the greenlight, not surprising given the franchise. What is surprising however is the place the show landed at: Netflix.
"The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" has been picked up for two seasons á 10 episodes each to likely be aired between fall 2018 and 2019.
It's no secret that Riverdale got off to a rocky start last season but with the backing on the Netflix deal that granted the streaming service day-1 streaming rigts got renewed for another year.
The show is without a doubt a bigger hit on Netflix than it is on the CW. So financially speaking this makes sense. Added to that "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" will NOT be a co-production between WB and CBS since without the CW, CBS has no influence over the property. This decision only goes to show the huge divide between the buisness partners.
While there are huge benefits of being on Netflix (binging, mature content etc.) there's one big downside that might hurt fans of "Riverdale": there might not be any cross-overs coming out way. Two different networks handling the connected shows makes crossover plots near impossible.
No news yet if we might see characters pop in and out though. This seems unlikely too though as Sabrina is set to shoot it's two seasons back-to-back. Starting from Febuary to October of 2018 (nearly 9 months of shooting, this will pose an interesting challenge for the writing staff as well as cast & crew).
"The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" is based on the comic-book series of the same name that itself was a gritty re-invention of the bright Archie-Comics original.
