Netflix has released the first trailer for Shadow and Bone, an adaptation of the first book in Leigh Bardugo's worldwide best-selling Grisha trilogy.

Set in a fantastical war-torn world, the story focuses on a young girl with mysterious powers who must learn to harness her abilities in order to save her people from an all-encompassing darkness.

Sound familiar?

To be fair, this does look pretty good, and while these Netflix adaptations tend to be hit or miss, Shadow and Bone certainly has potential.

The trailer sees Alina Starkov (up-and-comer Jessie Mei Li) encounter General Kirigan (The Punisher's Ben Barnes) for the first time after unleashing her power in order to save her friend Kaz (Freddy Carter).

Fans will know that Kirigan goes by a different name in the books, but it looks like his real identity is going to be kept secret in the show at first.

Shadow and Bone finds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive.

Shadow and Bone is set to premiere on Netflix this April.

Haven’t read the books so maybe I am wrong but this certainly sounds recycled from the plethora of similar “she’s different/special but doesn’t know it yet and will change everything” characters in films for the last 20 or so years.
