One of the new characters being introduced in Stranger Things Season 3 is Mayor Larry Kline. It's the first time we've seen the mayor of Hawkins, which is a bit odd considering all of the weird stuff that's gone down there these past few seasons.

Ahead of the season premiere, actor Cary Elwes sat down with The Wrap to share a few details about his "smarmy" new character, who might draw some comparisons to Donald Trump.

“It’s the first time we’re meeting the mayor of Hawkins and it turns out he’s a rather self-centered individual,” Elwes described. “And he’s one of these politicians that seems to be very full of himself and not always honest, and a little bit demeaning of others, perhaps. Like I said, he’s a bit smarmy.”

Other than brief clues from the trailers, not much is known about Mayor Kline's role in the upcoming season. Elwes claimed to not "know anything" regarding suspicions that the character may be evil. He only pointed out that Mayor Kline is obsessed with planning a giant Fourth of July tribute to the United States — a plot point that led him to believe the character is based on Donald Trump

“They go, ‘No, no, no, it’s not Trump, it’s just somebody that happens to be blonde and full of himself and likes the sound of his own voice,'” Elwes added. “Turns out [the Duffer Brothers] wrote that he takes over the Fourth of July celebrations — this is long before the president decided to do that — but this character, in this season, decides to take over the Fourth of July celebrations for himself because he thinks he can run it better than anybody else. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?”

For those unfamiliar with American politics, the President has been moving ahead with plans to shake up the annual July 4th celebration in Washington D.C.

Beyond the similarities to Trump, Elwes was askeda bout the mayor's connection to the new Starcourt shopping mall, which figures to play a prominant role in the upcoming season.

“Well, he definitely helped to sell it,” he said. “That’s his voice on the commercial you see for the mall. Again, a man who believes that the duties of the mayor extend to doing voice-over for commercials for malls.”

Stranger Things Season 3 premieres on Netflix on July 4.

Say what you will about Trump, but I'm getting tired of Hollywood's obsession with him. It kills originality.

@Benjamitesandwich - I thought it was pretty funny during the 2016 election when all the comic book TV shows worked Trump stuff into the plot where is didn't belong just to be "topical". Like when Penguin runs for Mayor in Gotham season 3 with the slogan "Make Gotham great again", lol

@Benjamitesandwich - Yeah, lemme tell ya. Trump is just destroying creativity everywhere he goes out in Hollywood.

This sentiment couldn't be any further from the truth. He is actually helping inspire narrative, specifically because of how fictional his actions seem to be.

@Unreal2k9 - I think you and I have very different perceptions of what originality or creativity is. There is nothing original or creative about recreating the Trump character because to do so takes very little thought or inspiration. It's easy. You are correct that he's inspiring narrative, but that narrative is consistently dry, overly repetitive, and it ALWAYS puts social commentary over compelling story.

@Benjamitesandwich - I would say obsessive criticism is certainly better than acceptance and normalization.

The Trump Hollywood affair continues. I'm all for good messages on TV shows, but it's getting a bit cliched and predictable.

To be fair, politicians were being portrayed as dishonest, duplicitous, vile turds in movies long before Trump came along. It's par for the course now... and kinda boring tbh.

It’s so F’in lazy.
Every time there’s a Republican President Hollywood starts screeching that the world is ending.
That World World 3 is going to happen and that the President is the new Hitler.
I’ve seen this crap since Ronald Reagan.
Next Republican President after Trump will be treated the same.
Yawn.

@madhombre - Well, Reagan cause massive damage to American culture, replacing the morality of the post-WW2 era with "Greed is Good". Dubya conned us into endless wars. And now Trump is a gross incompetent spreading hate, division and lies while committing flagrant human rights abuses. If you don't want to get "screeched" at, try electing decent people.

Of course we'll all be moderated and well-meaning, 'cause there are people who vote in Trump, and people who are against him, and i guess that's fair and democracy is...

Oh, never mind.
