To say that the ending of The Old Guard is left open for a sequel is quite the understatement, with two major plot threads left hanging for further exploration down the line. One of these saw the return of Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo), another immortal warrior from Andy's (Charlize Theron) past.

In an earlier flashback, we see Quynh sentenced to an unimaginably grim fate, as she's locked in an Iron Maiden and plunged into the middle of the ocean. Blaming herself, Andy spends decades attempting to rescue for her friend before eventually giving up the search.

In the final shot of the movie, we see that the now undoubtedly insane Quynh has somehow escaped and found her way to Booker's apartment.

During a new interview, director Gina Prince-Bythewood explains her decision to end the film with Quynh's return.

"It was part of the graphic novel, and I always loved it because I felt there would have been a hole, if it didn’t end the way it did," Gina tells Collider. "There's always a fear because you don't want to annoy an audience. I know how I feel when things are left open, but for me, we told the story. It does have a beginning, middle, and end. And then, there is a hint and a possibility of more, but that’s absolutely up to the audience."

A sequel hasn't been announced, but Prince-Bythewood is confident that it will happen... provided that's something fans want to see. "Greg [Rucka] has always envisioned this as a trilogy," she adds. "I know where the story is going and it's pretty dope."

@LNBfett12 - Its good stuff their regeneration reminds you of Wolverine but not as fast. Has good action and back story. Not as good as Extraction but better than the teen action crap Netflix has.

The ending of this movie was the most interesting part of it.

@Necropolitan - exactly. Its like the movie got its most interesting there.

Maybe a sequel will catapult this burgeoning franchise from fine to great.

@Necropolitan - I hated that most of the backstory that sounded interesting was mostly infodumped, and even the flashback with Quyhn was one of the best parts of this "meh" movie.

@Necropolitan - yea i enjoyed the scene because she has to be completely unhinged... drowning is only second to be burned alive, so you can only imagine what her mindset is now...

Watched it with the roommates yesterday night. Not bad, 7/10. As a fan of the comic I thought it was a solid adaptation. Could've been better (script needed work), but it was enjoyable for what is was.

@BlackBeltJones - since the script was written by the comics author himself, that's a story issue lmao. I mean, it's really corny in parts, but it's such a nice movie

@strangehighs - And I enjoyed the comic. Nothing super interesting, wolverine but a merc with no claws basically. But interesting enough.

The script has the character development fade to the background in favor of short bursts of repetitive beats early on.

@BlackBeltJones - it was ok 6/10 imo and the villain talked like an old bond villain to me ... idea was awesome script needed a few more re-writes

@knocturnalzen10 - exactly about the script. Chillin got a little too cartoony for me at times.

@BlackBeltJones - he only needed the laugh with lighting in the background :/ smh

Overall I quite enjoyed it. There was something understated in the approach that I found quite refreshing. Otoh in certain key spots it was quite predictable but not enough to kill the buzz.

Still have to watch this. My father told me it was pretty decent and everyone here are sharing those sentiments.

I got around to watching batman beyond the: return of the joker and mask of the phantasm this is next.

The movie was alright. Some Highlander-like characters who formed a paramilitary unit, that's a cool enough premise. Something was missing for me, though. The continuation of the story hinted at at the end seems way more interesting than the story we got. Same with a variety of potential prequel stories. Overall it probably felt the most like a decent pilot for a show that doesn't exist.

Undisputed highlight for me was the "He's not my boyfriend" scene. Those two were easily my favourite characters.

Wasn’t aware of the graphic novel so might go back and pick it up. Didn’t care for some aspects (the private goes from being...well...a private to doing some slick moves without any development towards those skills). T
But the saving grace for the series (for me) is the historical aspects and that potential. So many ways to examine the characters and their stories as individuals and a team. It seems to have progressively peeled those layers back so if the sequel follows suit, I’ll watch it. Since she is Scythian, it would have been a nice touch to have seen some tattoos on the lead character as they’ve recorded on some female Scythian mummies.
