A lot of DC fans were heartbroken when James Gunn confirmed that Henry Cavill's tenure as Superman had come to an abrupt end so soon after the actor announced his return, but it did give fans of Netflix's The Witcher hope that he might return to the role of Geralt for season 4.
The streamer recently announced that season 3 of the fantasy adventure series would be Cavill's last, with Liam Hemsworth stepping in to play the titular monster-hunter for season 4 onward. The news that Cavill had officially parted ways with the Man of Steel led to renewed campaigning for the Enola Holmes star to jump back into the lead role, but it was always a highly unlikely scenario.
Now, we have confirmation that Hemsworth will be holding on to those swords!
TV Line was told that "plans for The Witcher Season 4 will not be affected by news of Cavill’s Superman run ending," while a Netflix rep has also informed Gizmodo that things will remain on track.
Again, Cavill returning as Geralt of Rivia was always the longest of long shots. For one, Hemsworth has almost certainly signed a contract at this stage, so even if the showrunners wanted Cavill back, there'd be a lot of red tape to wade through to make it happen. Plus, we don't even know for sure that Cavill left the Netflix series because of Superman.
Reports have indicated that he hasn't been happy playing the character for a while because he feels the writers/showrunners don't respect the source material. While this has been refuted, there's no smoke without fire, so we wouldn't be surprised if there's at least some truth to the rumors.
Whatever the case may be, fans are going to have to get used to the prospect of Hemsworth picking up where Cavill leaves off after season 3.
