THE WITCHER: Liam Hemsworth May Have Been On The Show's Radar To Play Geralt Of Rivia Since 2018

Liam Hemsworth is set to replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher season 4, and a new report sheds some light on what led to The Hunger Games star replacing the DCU's Superman. Check it out!

It was last month when we first learned that Henry Cavill had decided to leave the role of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. His last time playing the iconic literary and video game character will come in the show's upcoming third season, with The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth tapped to take over as the formidable monster hunter starting with season 4.

The news has been met with something of a mixed (well, mostly negative) response from fans, though Redanian Intelligence (via SFFGazette.com) has now revealed more details about what led to the Hemsworthbeing cast.

Apparently, he was actually among the frontrunners for the role back in 2018, only to lose out to Cavill. It's unclear how close he actually came to joining the Netflix series at the time, but the point here is that the Australian actor is someone who has been on the radar of The Witcher's producers for some time.

Sources tell the site that there was no extensive casting process when it came time to replace Cavill and that it's likely producers revised old audition tapes and singled out Hemsworth. This all happened this past summer when season 3 of The Witcher was still in production.

Here's where things get interesting, though. They also point out that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Thunderbolts star Sebastian Stan was among those rumoured to be a frontrunner back in 2018. That has to mean there was at least a slim chance he was considered for the upcoming fourth season of the show as well.

As of right now, it doesn't look like production on season 4 will begin until the second half of 2023, meaning we probably won't get to see Hemsworth in action as Geralt until late 2024. The series does typically shoot on location in the UK, so keep your fingers crossed we get an early look at Cavill's replacement in action when those cameras start rolling.

@OptimusCrime - Damn, really? I thought its 1 of the best sword fantasy shows right now. Curious what you don't like about it? I think it all makes better sense once you finish the show but if 5 episodes in and it doesn't work then it may not be for you.

I think he's a better Geralt than Superman

I'll at least give it a shot with Hemsworth. I'm a big Henry Cavill fan, but it's not like he's a world class actor.

Liam's not a great actor, but Cavill really isn't much better like people are making him out to be.

I can't stand Cavill's attempt to imitate Doug Cockle's voice for Geralt. Just looks and sounds like he's doing cosplay.

It's the one instance where I would have preferred Cavill to be one of those actors that didn't look at the source material "because they didn't want to ruin their performance". Usually roll my eyes at that excuse, but I can actually agree it would have helped here.

@Kurne - Acting is not all what it's about. Cavill is charismatic as hell.

@LlamaLord - Lol Cavill is not charismatic at all. He's literally devoid of it.

Everyone used to say the same thing about him before he started talking about playing video games, and then that became his whole persona and got Reddit/the whole internet on his side.

I'm not a fan of Liam as Geralt, he is younger than I'd like and his older brother Luke makes more sense, yet even than I think there could have been better options.

@BlackIceJoe - Geralt isn't old though. He's relatively young, his hair was just turned white by the process of turning him into a Witcher which was an unusual mutation which is why he was given the nickname the White Wolf. So Liam is actually kinda perfect age for the role. And if you side by side Liam and Geralt from the games they have a very remarkably similarly facial structure, so once in the wig and contacts he will look more like the game than Henry did, especially it they give him the short on the sides ponytail pulled back and beard look from The Witcher 3.

@BlackIceJoe -

Looks wise I think he's almost perfect casting. My issue really is the voice. Can he nail a convincing Geralt gravely gruff attitude when he speaks. We shall see. He has the looks, if the performance is there than he could be better than Cavill.

They wanted a yes man who wouldn't harp on them for shitting on the source material.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - yup. If not a yes man, they CERTAINLY did not want a Super Fan like Cavill on set everyday to call them out.

So much press and attention on a show that is not that good.

I don't see him having remotely anywhere near the amount of charisma Cavill does for the role, which is easily the biggest strength of the show.

Only ever seen him in the movie Triangle! He was alright in that movie, but the movie itself is actually really good. If y'all haven't seen it, you should check it out. Anyway, he has to much of a "Baby Face" to be Geralt. Just my take

@DCfan84 - check out my post above with pictures. I think he's actually almost perfect casting visually. And lucky for Liam, Geralt isn't a difficult acting job as most of the performance is in the voice, and very subtle body language.

I love Cavill, but he was very different than the Geralt from the games, closer maybe to the books version of Geralt in style but he also hardly spoke in the first season. Character wise the show has butchered Geralts character.... maybe not butchered... bastardized maybe. Nerfed. He's a boring version of the subtle yet charming and charismatic Geralt from the games.

Cavill was also too bulky and short. Geralt is tall and slim so he can dance and dive around wolves and monsters, which is Liams body type. Honestly if you hop on The Witcher 3 right now and run around, that dude looks more like Liam than Henry.

This is quite literal a step down in casting. Say what you will about Henry's acting, Liam is an obviously bad actor lol.

This is obviously not any fault of Liam, but man. It's quite sad that Cavill is no longer Geralt.
I remember him being really enthusiastic about the role back in season 1.
And for those who still think it's because of Superman, well. I'd recommend those people to watch this video by Neon Knight.

So basically he's always been second choice.

Liam Hemsworth was great in a lot of movies. Needs to be in the MCU.
