THE WITCHER Petition To Fire Writers And Bring Back Henry Cavill Crosses 260,000 As New Spin-Off Is Revealed

It's a troubled time for The Witcher franchise, and while we have details on a new spin-off series, a petition demanding that Henry Cavill be brought back as Geralt of Rivia has passed 260,000 signatures!

We're now just weeks away from The Witcher: Blood Origin arriving on Netflix, and we have news on another planned spin-off courtesy of Redanian Intelligence (via SFFGazette.com).

The Witcher is set to return to our screens next summer, marking Henry Cavill's final appearance as Geralt of Rivia before Liam Hemsworth takes over the role in season 4. The streaming service is clearly determined to expand the world of the Continent, though, with this latest live-action project set to revolve around The Rats.

The infamous group of young Nilfgaardian misfits are heavily featured in Ciri's storyline in the books as she joins their ranks for a time, though the character's small screen counterpart will first meet them in season 3's seventh and eighth episodes. The Rats are expected to feature heavily in season 4 of The Witcher, but their spin-off will arrive before that.

It's unclear whether Freya Allan's Ciri would be involved, and the site isn't sure whether it's a prequel, an "inbetweenquel," or both.

What's interesting is that, among fans of the books, The Rats are not particularly well-loved. While that makes this decision somewhat surprising, it's become apparent in recent months that the creative team working on the series don't have a huge amount of respect for the source material, anyway, hence why they might want to put their own spin on the group.

In terms of the cast, the site expects the same actors from The Witcher to reprise their roles in the spin-off, meaning it would feature Christelle Elwin as Mistle, Fabian McCallum as Kayleigh, Juliette Alexandra as Reef, and Aggy K. Adams as Iskra. It's unknown who will star as Asse and Giselher.

The news comes at a time when goodwill for The Witcher franchise is at an all-time low. That's due to Cavill's departure, of course, and a Change.org petition asking for his return - and for the show's writers to be fired - recently crossed 250,000 signatures. In fact, as we write this, it sits at over 266,000!

Cavill is said to have left the show due to its many deviations from the source material, and with a Superman return now on the horizon, we'd say he's done with Geralt no matter how many signatures that petition gains.

I doubt either option happens unless we just stop watching the Witcher.

These companies are under the impression that it doesn't matter what they say to fans because they will buy the product no matter what.

They think we should be grateful to them for simply churning out the content from the relevant IP. But that isn't the case. They should be grateful to us for supporting their content. And if they aren't and treat us like sh!t, then we need to take our money and go elsewhere.

Witcher has already proven to be a successful IP. If this show does poorly, even if it leads to cancelation, it can still be revived with a better writing team, we can get a movie down the road, and more games as well.

Don't be a slave to these companies.

When the writers don't respect or even like the material they are adapting then why should we like or respect what they write? To take it a step further, many of these writing rooms seem to not respect, or even like the audience.

This isn't retail where the customer is always right, but the Golden rule should be to at least value the audience. It seems as if the current culture in these productions is to write for themselves and like minded people and screw the audience... You know the people who read the books and played the games. The people who said "Hey look, they are making a show about this thing I'm already a fan of, I'd like to see that"

And when the show doesn't resemble the established lore usually the complaint from the creators and clueless commenters is "Entitled fans" Oh I'm sorry, silly me. This thing I paid to see based solely on the fact it's a property I love doesn't resemble the product I love. Shame on me for being critical.

What a time. Lol. Don't sweat it though. The culture will devour itself eventually. In the meantime just go outside and breathe some fresh air. Take up a hobby. Exercise. And for the love of God stop funding these people. If we keep paying them with our dollars and time to churn out crap... They will keep doing just that.

@DarthOmega - You're making sense. People here don't like that.

@TheyDont - No... TheyDont

Sorry I couldn't resist.

Although I think petitions for entertainment are goofy and a total waste of time, I understand the frustration. I say just don't watch. Trust me, they may not be forthcoming with the public on viewership numbers, but they know. Once those views drop, they will drop the show. That sends a much clearer message than a frankly embarrassing petition. Change.org has many other actually IMPORTANT petitions. Sign one of those instead.

@GeneralZod - That's a good message for the creators of this show.

It would have gone a LOT easier for them if they had just cast Matt Bomer. Looks just like Henry so people would have barely noticed the difference.

@Forthas - that's racism.

@Forthas - may just be the photos you picked, but Henry feels like Clark Kent energy while Bomer is giving me Bruce Wayne vibes.

@TheVandalore - Bomer is not as buff...Cavill is 6'1 and Bomer 5'11...but otherwise they are pretty similar to me.

@Forthas - in a very general sense, I know what you mean. In the way that 2 comic artists with different styles are both drawing the same character, but the details are very different.

@Forthas - Cavill is the Ed McGuiness Superman and Bomer is the Micheal Turner Superman.

@Forthas - Cavill is the Leinil Francis Yu Superman and Bomer is the Jim Lee Superman.

I want Henry to succeed and continue to do well. He seems like a gamer/geek like most of us here. IMO tho, a lot of folks who watched S1 and S2 are going to watch S3 as it'll be a send off to Henry and the writers/producers will get cocky when they see the streaming numbers and they'll continue to move forward with S4 & S5 with little to no regard of the source material. Kinda sucks. Hope something comes up and they just end it after S3 with Cavill. Maybe do one of those two part season 3 things other shows do.

Easier to cancel the show next year after season 4.

I liked him in the role just as much as everybody else…But…If he isn’t happy with the production, and the production team were willing to let him leave the role, I don’t think it would be in anybody’s best interest for them to continue working together on things…

Just let the show have its slow and miserable demise, there's no saving it at this point.

Rather see it cancelled than it go to Liam. Dude is pretty bland.

If Cavill declared himself to be the Christ (like his JL co-star) I swear the Cavill Stans would actually believe him.

Do people not realize that Cavill didn't want to return? It was his choice. And I doubt his problem was with the writers more so than it probably was the producers or director.

Low IQ and ignorant people shouldn't be starting petitions.
