THE WITCHER Showrunner Responds To Backlash Over Henry Cavill's Decision To Leave Netflix Series

The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich responds to the backlash surrounding Henry Cavill's decision to walk away from the role of Geralt of Rivia, pleading with fans to tune into the upcoming season 3.

The Witcher has found itself embroiled in controversy lately, with claims the show's writers openly mock the source material doing little to win over fans already underwhelmed by the Netflix series. Then, there's the small matter of Henry Cavill walking away from the role of Geralt of Rivia, with the mantle set to pass to The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.

While no reflection on Liam, the response to that news has not been remotely positive, and it feels like a lot of viewers are preparing to turn their backs on the franchise.

Talking to TechRadar (via SFFGazette.com) about The Witcher: Blood Origin, franchise showrunner Lauren Hissrich responded to the backlash surrounding Cavill's departure (most have blamed the creative team's lack of interest in adhering to the source material for the Justice League star's decision to leave).

"It's a big deal for us, too," she admitted. "And that's the thing – there's a lot of talk and rumors about and we fully understand why fans are going there."

"What I will say is please come back for The Witcher season three so that we can continue to do this," Hissrich added. "Obviously, that [Cavill's departure] is huge news. But what I don't want to do is – this has to stay about Blood Origin, Declan [de Barra, Blood Origin's showrunner], the cast, and the crew. This is their time in the spotlight."

That's honestly not the greatest response, and feels like the words of someone who knows the series is coming under heavy fire. Throw in the fact that excitement surrounding The Witcher: Blood Origin already seems relatively low, and we can't help but wonder if that season 4 with Hemsworth will ever actually happen.

Hissrich could have used this opportunity to assure fans that many of the rumours are untrue, and while trying to keep the focus on that spin-off is understandable, it's not what the majority want to hear. As for asking viewers to tune in to season 3 so they can make a season 4, hundreds of thousands have signed a petition which demands it be scrapped...well, we're not sold on that either.

Hard to stay invested in a show when you know the biggest draw is gonna dip.

@ModHaterSLADE - Hard to stay invested when that draw is the only one who cared about the lore this whole time....

I liked the show more than most it seemed, despite the changes, but dang. This thing is deader than that dead horse HBO has been beating with GoT

@abd00bie - the first season sticks pretty close to the source material but makes weird timeline jumps

Second season takes a lot of liberties.

@bobevanz - it's always some producers friends nephew that gets the gig. Not the writers that actually care for the material. They're not nepo babies.

Let these seasons come out then cancel it. Seems fruitless going further.

Not the greatest response? I'd argue it's a great response to say stay on topic. In general too, because I imagine it's quite tiring for interviewees if interviewers go off-topic again and again.

And I'd also argue that the show they should stay on topic for, doesn't have low excitement. Yeoh is definitely something to look forward to.

It's over. With Cavill leaving, viewership will crater.

I really liked the show, but with its death coming, I don't even know if I'll bother to watch the next season.

R.I.P.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - I really liked Season 1 (rewatched it like 6 times). Couldn't even stay awake through most of Season 2. Can't remember any of it (except that one guy is a tree and witchers have a lame ninja warrior obstacle course). Still planning to watch Season 3 but interest is waning

I like the randomly greedy "Not a great response" as if that wasn't actually a very good answer. What's she gonna do, show you a transcript of all writers room conversations?

Not sticking to the source material, Henry Cavil departs, and Liam Hemsworth with bad writers sounds like bad sloppy seconds like the end of Two and a Half Men season.

Nothing about Blood Origin has seemed interesting, not from what they've said or any of the trailers. It just looks like a run of the mill fantasy show, with the amazing Michelle Yeoh in the lead.

Nah, I don't think I will. I was through when that butchered Eskel for no reason. I'll watch s3 through gif sets probably lol.
