THE WITCHER Showrunner Says Henry Cavill's Geralt Of Rivia Will Get A "Heroic Sendoff" In Season 3

The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich has addressed Henry Cavill's departure from the Netflix series, suggesting fans expect the actor to receive an appropriate sendoff before Liam Hemsworth takes over...

Henry Cavill shocked the world when he announced his time as Geralt of Rivia would conclude with The Witcher's upcoming third season. Not even the news that The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth is taking over the role softened the blow, and many fans are blaming the show's creative team for driving the actor away.

After all, there have been rumblings for weeks now that his frustration with the Netflix series' adherence to the books and games was a driving force in his decision to bid The Witcher farewell.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly (via SFFGazette.com), showrunner Lauren Hissrich stopped short of addressing that, but did promise a fitting farewell for Cavill's iteration of the hero.

"Henry has given so much to the show and so we want to honor that appropriately," she explained. "What is so interesting is that Season 3, to me, is the closest thing that we’ve done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books."

"Obviously, we can’t do every page, but Time of Contempt gave us so many big action events, plot points, defining character moments, huge reveals of a big bad," she continued in what feels a little like damage control mode. "There’s so much to do that we were able to stick really, really closely with the books."

"Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri. And to me, it’s the most heroic sendoff that we could have, even though it wasn’t written to be that. Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him in Season 4. He’s a slightly different Geralt than we expected. Now, by the way, that’s an understatement."

So, with a change in actors comes a shift in approach to how the character will be portrayed. That sounds like a very James Bond-ian way to handle this passing of the mantle, but given the backlash from fans and Cavill's love of the character, is there even a slim chance he could return to The Witcher, whether it be in front or behind the camera?

"We haven’t even thought about that at this point," Hissrich admits. "We have plans to keep this going in various permutations."

Just like Cavill's time as Superman is up, we're guessing The Witcher season 3 will see him say goodbye to The Continent for good. There are bound to be other iconic roles for him (Captain Britain, anyone?), and we're now a little more intrigued than we previously were to see how the series handles his departure and Hemsworth's debut.

The Witcher season 3 is set to premiere on Netflix next summer.

So we’re getting another protagonist that’s not Geralt?

@ScaryTerry - No it’ll still be Geralt, just different…Literally different, but total “new” ~sarcasm~ 🙄…

They’re saying anything they can to get people on board with season 3 and 4, especially now that Blood Origin turned out to be dumpster juice…

@ScaryTerry - They should just have Hemsworth be a different Witcher. Geralt goes away for (reasons), enter Gerald of Riviat.

@vegetaray - I wouldn't call Blood Origin dumpster juice, but it's not that great either.

They even acknowledge in the show that it's just another story about a group of unlikely characters coming together to overcome great odds.

@Rosraf - Ravix of Fourhorn

Cool, now I know he'll die. Never gave this show a chance, and I'm glad I didn't. As a fan of the games, this was a textbook example on how you must respect the material!

@bobevanz - He won’t die at all, since Liam Hemsworth is playing Geralt of Rivia in Season 4 that was pretty much obvious. I think she means there’s a big action scene at the end for Henry Cavill and that it is a big send off for Henry Cavill. And also ofcourse trying to get people to watch 😂

I wouldn't mind it if they just had the show either end, or continue with a different Witcher. If Cavill get's a proper send-off, that doesn't sound impossible.

@bkmeijer1 - I could see him 'dying' at the climax of a battle or something and witcher magic used to bring him back. Then that being used to explain the visual changes between actors *if* they even acknowledge it. I'd rather p[refer they just not acknowledge the actor change at all and roll on. Nothing wrong with changes if they stay true to the original story intent or character growth.

@Deklipz - I don't wanna see them just ignoring it. Think Liam does have to prove himself to keep me invested in a show in which he is the lead.

There are still a few short stories from the books that haven't been adapted, so they can always go through those.

@bkmeijer1 - Oh I definitely think he needs to show that he can handle leading the series forward, I just meant whether they address the visual change or not. Hemsworth is solid as an actor but he has yet to lead a franchise so it’ll be interesting to see where things go. A lot will depend on his chemistry with the rest of the cast. As far as some of the other stories, I wouldn’t mind if they gave him a couple stand alone episodes to establish him and let us get used to him before season 4.

@Deklipz - visually, got it. I think having him die and being resurrected would be a good way, if Liam is also Geralt. If he's a new Witcher though, that's addressing enough
Deklipz
Deklipz - 12/29/2022, 8:40 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Well yeah, but they’ve stated that it’s a recast so that kind of negates that.

@Deklipz - then I kinda wanna see them go the resurrection route

Just watched the Blood Origins and let’s just say the Witcher without Cavill is underwhelming. Looking forward to the last season of the Witcher I’ll probably be watching.
