Henry Cavill's decision - if indeed it really was his decision - to step away from The Witcher after the upcoming third season came as a shock to fans of the Netflix fantasy series, and the streamer choosing to continue the show with a new actor, Liam Hemsworth, in the lead role of Geralt led to even more backlash.

Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has previously touched on Cavill's departure, hinting that there may be more to the story than initial reports suggested. Unfortunately, if this is the case, we're going to have to wait a while longer to learn what really happened.

During a new interview with Total Film (via Renanian Intelligence), Hissrich once again addressed the Man of Steel star's exit, and outlined some of the options they considered after the announcement.

"It was time for him in his life to move on. I think we’ve all been mourning this in our own way. We had the choice to have Geralt exit and to end the show. [But] that’s not something that we were willing to do. There’s just too many stories left to tell."

Hissrich reveals that they also tinkered with the idea of replacing Geralt of Rivia with a different monster hunter.

"I don’t think that’s what anyone wanted either," she said. [Liam's] got enormous shoes to fill, but also has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement for it. It’s obviously a brand-new chapter for us. And there’s a lot of things involved. But at the end of the day we love what we’re doing and we’re gonna keep going."

How do you guys feel about The Witcher continuing without Cavill in the lead? Drop us a comment down below, and check out some new season 3 stills along with the recently released teaser.

How about replacing the showrunner and bringing Cavill back?
I just don’t see how Netflix thought this was a good decision.

Yeah, you can still cancel it.

Yeah no. Don't try to play this as you actually respecting him when you publicly slandered his name. You gave all those reasons why he was "basically impossible to work with".

You're only saying this because you realized no one was buying your bs and sided with cavill over all of this.

Let the Witcher burn. Hopefully Warhammer will be great.

@Origame - I think they were caught out as he knew the source material and cared for it far more than they did...

Looking forward to the Warhammer stuff though! such a rich lore that there is amazing potential in the hands of someone who understands and cares for it.

I will watch this season but not sure how i feel about Liam, he's a pretty awful actor so i may just stop after this one. Regardless... Netflix went a f*cked up by not choosing to stick with Henry

This would have been such a massive loss of the show was even half decent, but it isnt, so... fine. I wouldn't be watching S3 even if Cavill had stuck around.

@MarkCassidy - I liked the first season but the second was hard to watch. It feels incohesive ann the quality from episode to episode can be very jarring as some are done really really well and others are just bad.

@Deklipz - First was okay... at least good enough to convince me to watch S2, which was pretty much a train wreck.

I can see Netflix lose a lot of subscribers with the whole charge extra for every extra household model, which is in England now as well.

Witcher was a big draw to plenty of people, so not Keeping the main star could hurt them

Cavill could only carry the show so far. First season was interesting at best, but the second was just CW material of absurdity.

I have no hopes or expectations for this upcoming season.

TBH I feel for Liam. He’s a solid actor and I think he could actually be great in the role. But the showrunners are deadshits and the fan base will NEVER give him a fair shake after how Cavill got shafted, no matter how good a job he does.

I can't believe Netflix dropped the ball the way the have with this show. With a better budget, showrunner, and writers, this would've been a hit fantasy show for them. Maybe Stranger Things really was lightning in a bottle.
