"The gods started this war, now it's time to fight."

Netflix has released an exciting - and fairly gruesome - first teaser for Zack Snyder's adult animated Norse mythology series, Twilight of the Gods, which is set to premiere on the streaming service on September 19.

The promo is less than 40 second long, but it crams in quite a bit of bloody action, as a mortal warrior named Sigrid wages war against Thor and all of his fellow Asgardian gods.

"In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds, and great despair, Leif (Stuart Martin), a mortal king, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks), an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love," reads the new synopsis. "On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif survive a wrath of terror from Thor (Pilou Asbæk), which sets them — and a crew of crusaders — on a merciless mission for vengeance, against all odds. This heroic story of love, loss, and revenge, is a journey to hell and beyond … across fantastical lands, battlefields fierce and bloody, and wars waged against deities and demons."

The project has been described as "Anime-influenced," but judging by this preview, we'd say the animation style has more in common with Irish Academy Award-nominated Cartoon Saloon studio (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, Wolfwalkers).

Check out the teaser in the player below, and let us know what you think in the comment section.

The impressive voice cast features Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049, The Girl in the Spider’s Web) as SIGRID, Stuart Martin (Jamestown, Babylon) as LEIF, Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones, Ghost in the Shell) as THOR, John Noble (Fringe, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) as ODIN, Paterson Joseph (Peep Show, The Leftovers) as LOKI, Rahul Kohli (iZombie, The Haunting of Bly Manor) as EGILL, Jamie Clayton (Sense8, The L Word: Generation Q) as THE SEID-KONA, Kristopher Hivju (Game of Thrones, The Witcher) as ANDVARI, Peter Stormare (Fargo, Prison Break) as ULFR, Jamie Chung (The Hangover Part II, Once Upon a Time) as HEL, Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) as INGE, and Corey Stoll (House of Cards, Ant-Man) as HRAFNKEL.

Stone Quarry Animation developed the series with Xilam Animation, a Parisian production company behind the likes of Oggy and the Cockroaches.

Twilight of the Gods has been rated TV-MA, with notices for language, nudity, sex and smoking.

@Forthas - you can't rip off a mythology. It's in public domain. Thor doesn't belong to the MCU and I wish it he never did because they ruined his image forever with all the stupid jokes. Hopefully Zaddy makes Thor mighty once and for all.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - “Hopefully Zaddy makes Thor mighty once and for all” might be the most Homo-Aryan-erotic thing I’ve heard a freak on this site say in a long time.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - I've been reading the old 80s Thor comics. I'm a few years into the Walt Simonson era. They're so good. Roy Thomas and Keith Pollard's work on the book is great but he elevated the book to another level. I agree with you. It's depressing seeing your favorite Avenger be made into a fool. I'm a huge Beta Ray Bill fan and I shudder to think what they're gonna do to him. I'm guessing endless why the long face horse quips.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - Maybe not the characters, but the story has some of the same beats with a warrior woman who I am not sure if she is evil or not...seeming to play a major role.

@Forthas - This animated series has zero in common with that movie to which this gif belongs, and thank Oden for that.

It seems to be inspired by the Sagas.

@Monkeyballs2 - seems to me like a personall issue, my silly stupid dude. Maybe go and work on your personal issues where you see gay stuff where it's not there? It's a fun way of addressing someone you admire. The same way Metallica fans often call James Hetfield ''Papa Het''.

@SodaBurps - that's why I said MCU, not Marvel. Marvel's Thor is great and is rooted in the Norse Mythology and Scandinavian history. The MCU abounded all of that in favor of bad gags and bad VFX.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - Oh I know. I just wanted to shoot the breeze about the comics a bit. I'm the only person I know who reads and appreciates comics as much as myself. My wife didn't grow up with them and doesn't have much interest unfortunately. The only Thor character I enjoyed at all was Hela.

@VISIONaryNPa1 - The dialogue and sound effects didn't come across well either and felt like game cut scenes from when I was still playing vidoes games frequently like two decades ago...

...love Norse mythology so normaly check out anything related to it but after that may take some convincing to give this one a shot unless WoM is great.

We'll see, still reserving judgement for now till a FULL trailer drops, but for a teaser that was poor.

I wanna give this a chance because it does look cool and have some interesting ideas, like every Snyder project. Snyder's stories are abysmal though, so I'm gonna wait for reviews with this one.

JustAWaffle - 6/14/2024, 4:13 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I agree

Snyder is like today’s Michael Bay. He has a niche style, but he’s an inch deep and a mile wide. If he would share that style with decent writers/story tellers then he would do much MUCH better.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 6/14/2024, 5:52 AM
@JustAWaffle - difference is that Michael Bay is actually a good director (i.e. more than a inch deep). And that's a hill I'm willing to die on.

Bay comes up with the craziest action sequences and does get fun performances out of his actors, whereas Snyder is better off as a cinematographer imo.
JustAWaffle
JustAWaffle - 6/15/2024, 1:39 AM
@bkmeijer1 - oh definitely not a 1 for 1. My big idea was that they both need outside leadership and to get the best out of them.

Hollywood execs: What else can we find for Snyder to screw up? No matter how sh!tty it is, let's pour a gazillion dollars into it and watch it go right down the drain.

Looks likes a poor man attempt to emulate Genndy Tartakovsky style.

While I'll probably skip this, I will say I really liked Snyder's other animation attempt in Owls of Ga'Hoole. I think it's the Snyder movie I've rewatched the most due to my kids, but it's engaging.
