Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Passengers) is taking a break from the big screen to star in Adam McKay's new Netflix project.

The highly in-demand Academy Award-winner will take the lead in a sci-fi comedy called Don't Look Up, which tells the story of two low-level astronomers who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching asteroid that will destroy Earth. McKay wrote the movie and will produce under his Hyperobject Industries banner with Kevin Messick, but Deadline's report doesn't mention if he'll also direct.

“I’m so thrilled to make this movie with Jen Lawrence. She’s what folks in the 17th century used to call ‘a dynamite talent’,” McKay said. “And the fact that Netflix sees this movie as a worldwide comedy sets the bar high for me and my team in an exciting and motivating way.”

Scott Stuber, head of Netflix films, added: “Adam has always had great timing when it comes to making smart, relevant and irreverent films that depict our culture. Even if he somehow ends up predicting planet Earth’s imminent demise, we’re excited to add this to our slate before it all comes to an end.”

Production on Don't Look Up is expected to kick off this April.

I didn't hate her at first. Not at all. Now I do. More and more everyday. I don't even know exactly why. But I definitely hate her. #whitemalerage

@clornelas - I know a lot of people dislike Gwenth Paltrow (understanable imo) and Anne Hathaway (that one I don't get), but this chick is truly annoying and a DUNCE imo. Yeah, she'll make more money in one year than I will in my lifelife, but so will a ton of dopey athletes etc. JL literally has a 9th grade education and it shows. I never got the appeal of this chick.

@MotherGooseUPus - I feel like you should get it for Succession alone, one of the best shows on TV, but they're building a really strong catalogue. Watchmen, Barry, Chernobyl, Parasite, Lovecraft Country out this fall, etc;

Maybe she realized she became a bit overexposed.

She did get a bit overexposed, but she is a great actress and has a pretty decent CV. Red Sparrow was awesome... surprised more people didn't see it.

@RorMachine - Red Sparrow was sold as a Salt-like PG-13 spy film and wound up being rated R. I can see why it did poorly

She was really good in Mother! though

@tmp3 - she was great in Mother even tho that's a film you can only watch once .... imo

@TheJustinHammer - I thought Mother! was self indulgent and super on-the-nose dog shit the first time I saw it, but I saw it again and really liked it lmao. I still think Aronofsky's blatant text-instead-of-subtext was annoying, and it's not as deep as it thinks it is, but I think it works incredibly well during the running time; the set pieces in the house were really well done too.

@TheJustinHammer - Just trying to start a conversation. What movie you guys watched multiple times in your entire lifetime? Mine was Bourne Identity. And I was surprised to meet people in rl having the same answer. Let's see if there's some Matrix glitch shit going on here.

@RorMachine - Red Sparrow is 1 of the only 2 films I’ve not finished, I was bored senseless with the obvious plot and twists and the movie just kept going & going. mother! was pretty good, if extremely in your face about everything.

JL in a comedy? A lot of people like to laugh at her but she's never been comedically funny IMO.

After reading that she became overexposed (how else though do you work in Hollywood then?) it makes me wonder who could be then the new overexposed star. Timothé Chamalet? Florence Pugh? One comes, another enters, it's logical.

I like Adam McKay's movies, I will keep an eye out for this. IIRC it'll be also her first comedy entry in the genre of humor.

Man people really hate Jennifer Lawrence lmao I remember I first started working at Walgreens before the first hunger games came out and she was America's darling now it seems like no one likes her lol

I really don't know what she did to everybody because I don't follow that stuff but she's a good actress in my opinion
