A New Hope was where we first heard about the "Clone Wars," but it wasn't until George Lucas' Star Wars prequels that period was finally elaborated on. Attack of the Clones introduced the Galaxy's Clone army, The Clone Wars TV series revealed the full extent of the conflict, and Revenge of the Sith saw them forcibly used to wipe the Jedi out as part of Order 66.

Up until now, only fan theories have been able to address why, in the two decades or so between Episodes III and IV, the Clone Troopers were somehow replaced by human Stormtroopers.

Well, The Bad Batch has finally shed some light on how the Empire phased them out.

In the show's first season, we saw human troopers being trained by clones and the destruction of Kamino's cloning facilities at the hands of Vice Admiral Rampart. This week's two-parter showed that there's growing dissension among the clones forced to bend to the Empire's will and it's clear the soldiers are no longer the malleable force Emperor Palpatine requires.

After Rampart attempts to sell the Galactic Senate on a new "Defense Recruitment Bill" to replace clones with a conscripted military, he's thrown under the bus by the Emperor when his crimes are revealed (all of which he enacted at 'ol Sheev's request).

With that, the villain twists the situation to his liking, convincing the Senate to agree to that act so he can "usher in a new era, heralded by the Imperial Stormtrooper."

We're anticipating the animated series delving into the fallout from this decision, though we got a taste of that in Obi-Wan Kenobi when the Jedi crossed paths with a homeless Clone Trooper. Filling in these gaps is definitely a good use of the series, though it feels like there's still more story to tell.

Despite no longer cloning soldiers, we know Palpatine focused on extending his own life through cloning, so perhaps that's something the Bad Batch will encounter...after all, we're still waiting on an origin story for Supreme Leader Snoke!

What do you guys think about this explanation for Stormtroopers replacing clones?

Somehow Palpatine replaced the clone troopers...

@IcePyke - I knew I said that I wanted the sequels to have more quotable or memeable lines, this is not what I meant.

Somehow... sigh

I mean, wasn't that obvious with the shortened life span of clones? Did we specifically need to see the meeting?

Honestly, should've been something like a city council meeting approving something mundane. Like, "all for more of the budget into pot hole repair say aye".

@Origame - the council didn't want another standing army when they weren't in war time. So this meeting was necessary

@Vigor - except it was a replacement, not a full on army. Besides, until the rebellion went full swing the stormtroopers were more of a police force.

Haven't caught up yet with The Bad Batch, but this makes sense nonetheless. Sounds like a Palpatine thing to do to just accumalate others' plans in secret.

I love this show and I like the way it weaves between the loves and other cartoons, but damn Star Wars is toast if it couldn’t explain all that in a movie.

This most recent episode was probably the best one so far, cannot tell you how focused I was when Palpatine shows up in the Senate chamber. I really enjoy the groundwork for this show, I feel last season will be the Clone Rebellion and Bad Batch helping out. Which will hit in the feels for our beloved clones.

Dunno if the clones having shorter lifespans is still a thing in the post-Disney continuity but I like this explanation A LOT off the back of The Clone Wars. Knowing that the Clones were forced to conform with the chips made Order 66 way more effective, and now the idea that their control is gradually waning makes the necessity of Stormtroopers make way more sense.

Not gonna lie. That sounds boring as all hell. I’m sure it comes across more entertaining in action though

Palpatine traded in Short life span for Low shot accuracy.

At least Rogue One and Andor made Stormtroopers menacing again.

I'm really not waiting on an origin story... Rise of Skywalker summed it up with Palpatine saying he made him... what more do we need to know?
It's a bit disappointing, but it's laid out rather plainly based on everything we know.
