LANDO: Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Suggests Lack Of Movement On Series Is Down To Donald Glover

Lando looked set to be one of the biggest Star Wars TV shows on Disney+, but it's been a long time since any sort of update has been shared. Here's the latest from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy...

During a Disney Investor Day at the end of 2020, Lucasfilm made a series of big Star Wars announcements. Somewhat embarrassing is the fact that most of them have yet to become a reality; Rangers of the New Republic was scrapped when Gina Carano was fired, Rogue Squadron appears to have reached a standstill, and there's still no sign of Lando.

The latter was supposed to star Donald Glover, with the actor reprising his role as Lando Calrissian from 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story. Talking to Cinema Blend (via SFFGazette.com) at Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy shared an update on the Disney+ series...but it was a weird one.

"You need to ask Donald," the executive responded when asked why the show hasn't materialised. "He's the one that holds all the cards here. But there's no movement. I will say that honestly. But it's not for lack of trying. It's just that he's a very busy guy. He's got another series, and I think one other thing, and then he'll come our way. So patiently waiting."

This is an odd update from Kennedy as she appears to be shifting blame for the delay onto Glover, only to then suggest Lando will happen down the line.

We're not sure if creative differences or something along those lines is the issue here, but this feels like another Star Wars project unlikely to happen under Kennedy's leadership. She's not wrong about Glover being busy, though, as he's got a fourth and final season of Atlanta in the pipeline along with the Mr. and Mrs. Smith reimagining for Amazon.

Hopefully, the series does happen, but we don't anticipate getting another update for a while. For now, you'll want to stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for all the latest.

Hey, if he's too busy, then, recast! I'm sure Jaleel White has some free time on his hands...!👍😉

@Waddles - I watched a video a few years back pretty much confirming this and how his cast mates thought of him. The word entitled came to mind

@Waddles - Honestly, the only thing I know him from is Spiderman: Homecoming.
I heard that his character was supposed to be related to Miles Morales.
All I remember is that he looked high af!

I could care less for the show, I am however annoyed with this new season of Atlanta. He had all this time to write scripts and this is the result lol

@bobevanz - This season of Atlanta is beyond genius. He is unapologetically showcasing societal issues from the past few years, between episodes that continue the trios trail in a new landscape, ironically outside of Atlanta.

What we are witnessing is the power of ownership. The show is the exceeding my expectations. I never know what may happen next, but I feel like I'm walking inside the mind of the guy who wrote "This is America". I am excited to see how he concludes with season 4.

Way to throw the guy under the bus… Kathleen Kennedy is the worst part about the Star Wars franchise. Let’s blame the guy who does the acting instead of starting on a good script and planning for whatever Lando project they want to do. I could actually care less about a Lando series but if you’re gonna make it then Make it good.

@Waddles - I definitely see the under tone of blame in what she said and even if Glover is on board to be a writer you’d think they could hire someone to get it started and maybe keep it cohesive to whatever plans are going on in the franchises other movies and series. Glover could always give a new draft of a first drafted script when he becomes available.

@slickrickdesigns - I don't think any writers have been announced for the show, so it would be smart to atleast start working on that indeed.

Maybe they already have a premise, which I hope is Billy Dee Williams' Lando using Glover's Lando holo-recordings as a framing device to tell stories, but I doubt they have much.

I keep hearing glover is busy but I rarely see anything of his being put out, not saying that doesn't mean it isn't happening. I also think he's overrated. I liked season 1 of Atlanta but it just gets weirder and weirder. I don't care how deep you make music, movies, and any other media but if it isn't interesting as well as deep it won't be watched by me

Good thing they’re not rushing it because you don’t rush someone like Donald Glover if you’re lucky enough to have him. In an ideal world they just give full control of the show to Donald and Stephen Glover along with Hiro Murai. Exceptionally talented creative minds who work so beautifully together. Just let them do what they want.

@PhoenixBlade - think Hiro Murai is a really good director. Can really set a certain vibe really well, like he did with Guava Island or his episodes from Station Eleven (which is a show in general I really liked)

Can we move away from the skywalker era? It's getting boring them playing it safe and seeing the same stuff rehashed again and again

@pyramosteu - I want a series centered on a non humanoid alien. If fox can make us care about Caesar then I'm sure Lucasfilms can do SOMETHING not starring a humanoid figure.

I liked Glover enough in the role but if it never happens, I won’t lose any sleep over it. I’m more excited for the last season of Atlanta and whatever else he has down the line. Have no interest in Mr. and Mrs. Smith but maybe that’ll change when more is revealed on it. But any original content he’s got coming, I’m down for it.

One minute KK is like “we made mistakes recasting original characters and we won’t do it again”
And then she’s like “hey we can’t wait to give you more of the recasted Lando”

Kennedy sure has a funny way of talking about anyone related to the Solo solo movie.

Anyway, what I think she's trying to say is that right now there are scheduling conflicts, even though its also phrased in a way that he might write/produce the show.

He is ridiculously busy, and his other projects like Atlanta are more personal and he has more control over them so it makes sense that he's prioritizing them.
