Taika Waititi Addresses The Tone Of STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN; "You Can't Put Too Many Jokes In"

Not much is known about The Mandalorian but director Taikia Waititi has now revealed the tone of the Disney+ series and what it's been like to work with producer Jon Favreau in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...

Taika Waititi has been credited with saving the Thor franchise after injecting some humour into the franchise with Thor: Ragnarok but it sounds like the filmmaker has had to change his approach to work on Star Wars: The Mandalorian. He's one of many directors working on the Disney+ series but don't expect his episode to feature too many laughs.

"Star Wars is very different to Marvel style," Waititi explained during a recent appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour. "They know that the tone of the first films really should be kind of adhered to. That’s what the fans like and you can’t really disrespect it, I guess, is a nicer way of saying [you] can’t put too many jokes in."

That will more than likely come as a relief to fans who rejected the humour in movies like The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi

As for what it's been like to work with executive producer Jon Favreau, he added: "Favreau’s a genius and so smart and so good at what he does and creating these worlds. The scripts are really great. It was really fun doing something in the Star Wars universe. It was every kid’s dream just to see a stormtrooper. When you’re doing these scenes with like 50 or 60 of them, it’s pretty amazing. I loved it."

The Mandalorian is expected to premiere when the online streaming service launches later this year and more details should be revealed at Star Wars Celebration, including a possible first look.

I hope he directs more than one episode.

@L0RDbuckethead - He won't, not in season 1, almost all the directors have been announced already, and it's one different per episode. Favreau for Episode 1 (wink wink), Taika, Dave Filoni ([frick] yeah, the guy who helmed Rebels and Clone Wars animated), Bryce Dallas Howard (why not), Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones, Lost in Space, better Call Saul), and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, Confirmation). That's 6 we know of.

@Asturgis - I realize that, I'm just expressing hope that he will return to direct additional episodes.

@L0RDbuckethead - tbf, the director of a television show is very different to a director of a movie. Showrunner is a closer comparison as that's the role that handles the overall tone, feel, and whatnot. I doubt you'd be able to tell which episode is directed by him unless you know beforehand.

The little we've seen looks good, but then so did The Last Jedi. Fingers crossed.

I’m actually excited for this. Small chance at redemption for Disney and star wars.

There's an interesting detail in there:
"...just to see a stormtrooper. When you’re doing these scenes with like 50 or 60 of them,..."
So, post RotJ, but we're still seeing strong imperial presence. That's very interesting!

@Highball - from what we can guess it seems there are still Imperial remainants post-Jakku.

We know in some stories some Moffs didn't respond to the call to Jakku and upcoming books (such as Alphabet Squadron) will deal with the remnants of the Empire that didn't stand down/go into hiding to become the first order.

Peronsally I think it makes sense. The Empire was so widely spread around the galaxy. I think wiht the death of the Emperor so Moffs/Admirals would try to obtain power. With a few star destroyers worth of imperials they could easily occupy a planet.

@StormXmen123 - Totally, and I'd look forward to seeing the Empire on the decline post RotJ as a parallel story

@Kyos - Additionally, he goes on to say that he's been talking with Marvel Studios about "new" stuff, but he doesn’t know exactly what that might be, yet. He says he definitely wants to do another movie with Marvel Studios.

@L0RDbuckethead - even if he doesn't do Guardians 3, I think I'd like to see Waititi step into James Gunn's role as spearheading the Cosmic Universe for Marvel.

I don't think the Cosmic Universe needs to go quite as comedic as Ragnarok (which still had very heartfelt moments fwiw), but I definitely think the Cosmic Universe going forward should have a Guardians/Ragnarok tone.

@thewanderer - What about a Nova Corps film?

@L0RDbuckethead - or the original Ravagers with Stallone, Yeoh, Duncan and Rosenbaum.

That’s rumored to be happening.

@thewanderer - Duncan? You mean Ving Rhames?

I'd be totally down for that.

@thewanderer - RIP Michael Clarke Duncan.

But for real, I'd definitely pay to see an OG guardians film with that cast.
