Neil Gaiman's AMERICAN GODS Lives On The Small Screen

HBO didn't want it, er, couldn't figure out how to do it, but someone else has......................................................

It was reported a little more than a week ago that HBO had indeed given up on trying to bring Gaiman's American Gods to the small screen. Thankfully Starz has now picked up the ball now and is running with it. According to Neil Gaiman himself on his Facebook page:

"...the team at Starz have been quite certain that they wanted to give Shadow, Wednesday and Laura a home since they first heard that the book was out there. I can't wait to see what they do to bring the story to the widest possible audience able to cope with it."

Starz had this to say:

American Gods is a project that deserves to be made. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil, we believe we can create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans and viewers.”

American Gods tells the story of Shadow, who, in his last days of prison, learns that his wife, Laura, dies in a mysterious car crash. Courtesy of Goodreads, "Numbly, he makes his way back home. On the plane, he encounters the enigmatic Mr. Wednesday, who claims to be a refugee from a distant war, a former god and the king of America. Together they embark on a profoundly strange journey across the heart of the USA, whilst all around them a storm of preternatural and epic proportions threatens to break."

This is FANTASTIC news! Being a long time fan of Gaiman, and of "American Gods," it is very exciting to see someone has the faith they can do this justice. Fingers crossed!

Spoiler!

The book was good, just not as good as the concept. Old gods (Odin, Frey, etc) are still around, but power comes from belief. And new gods have risen up, the god of media for example, to fill the power vacuum. Old vs New, and Shadow is an pawn in this game.

Would I have liked to see it premiere on HBO? Yes. Could it be because I only have HBO and not Starz? Yes also. Do I think Starz will have the best budget and quality that HBO has, to translate the novel as good, as HBO did with Game of Thrones? Not quite.
