Robert Richardson has signed on to shoot Venom 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

One of Hollywood's most prestigious cinematographers, Richardson is a three-time Academy Award winner for his work on JFK, The Aviator, and Hugo. He's frequently worked with a number of prominant directors in his career, including multiple films with Oliver Stone, Quintin Tarantino, and Martin Scorsese.

Richardson is coming off work as cinematrographer on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His other Tarantino films include Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight. For Scorsese, he's worked on Casino, Bringing Out the Dead, The Aviator, Shutter Island, and Hugo. With Stone, he won an Academy Award for JFK, but also worked on Platoon, The Doors, Natural Born Killers, and more. Suffice to say, Richardson has got a quite the extensive resume and his experience should prove valuable for Sony's sequel.

Venom 2 will actually be a reunion for Robert Richardson and Andy Serkis, as the former was the cinematographer for 2017's biographical drama Breathe, which happened to be the directorial debut for Serkis.

Venom 2 is slated for release in 2020. Tom Hardy will be reprising his role as Eddie Brock and will be joined by returning star Michelle Williams. Woody Harrelson will also return as Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage.

This is shaping nicely, they are pulling a lot of talent in front of and behind the camera.

Really excited for some more casting news now, hope they can elevate this sequel and turn it into something great.

His resume is a list of weird done well. Hoping the sequel can keep the weird, prevent plaot holes, and make an overall higher quality film.

This is how you capitalize on a big win. Regardless of how you felt about the first venom, this is shaping up to be a good upgrade for the sequel.

I’m so confused and conflicted. A Tom Hardy solo Venom film is like my ideal CBM in theory, but then I absolutely hated the film and thought it was pure garbage, and a waste of a great talent like Hardy. But now they’ve hired Andy Serkis, Hardy is co-writing and they’ve got an A+ cinematographer on board? I don’t know how to feel. If it was a reboot or retry with hardy but a new take, maybe. But it’s a sequel. I can’t forget the pure shit that the first one was, and they already ruined what could have been a great characterization for both Brock and Venom. One of Tom Hardy’s coolest traits as an actor is his voice (look at Alfie in Peaky Blinders). But Venom’s voice was lame and Brock... eh. I dunno. We’ll see. I hope it’s more a reboot than a sequel. They could have done something really cool and stylish with the flavour of antihero films like The Guest or even Drive.

As excited as I am for the step up in the creative team. I'm still skeptical about the writing for the film. If they can nail the script everything else should come full circle.
