Ruben Fleischer is currently doing the rounds to promote Zombieland: Double Tap, but it was around this time last year that the filmmaker released Venom, a movie that was not well-received by critics.

During a recent interview, the filmmaker was asked what, if anything, he would change about the Marvel Comics adaptation, and there is one thing, in particular. "If anything, I would have changed the critics’ reaction to it. I was really bummed that people didn’t like it because it’s a crowdpleasing movie and I’m not sure if there was just blowback against Sony or people just worship Marvel."

"But I was really surprised that the critics [were gunning for it] because audiences really enjoyed the movie,"
he continued. "And so many people who’ve seen it just appreciated that it was a fun superhero movie. So I was a little surprised. I don’t know what they were expecting."

As for what comes next, Fleischer admitted that he's looking forward to Andy Serkis' take. "I was kinda happy to let somebody else take over. And I’m excited to see what he does with it."

Interestingly, the director appeared to confirm that Sony's endgame is for Venom to cross paths with Tom Holland's Spider-Man. "That’s where it’s all going to lead," he revealed. "And that’s the exciting thing, because we changed the origin of Venom … in the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man but because of the Marvel-Sony thing we weren’t able to that. And so the thing I think it’s building towards, and will be exciting to see, is when they actually do confront each other."

Will Spidey swing into Venom 2? We'll have to just wait and see. For now, check out our Zombieland: Double Tap interview with Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg in the player below!

While I found Venom enjoyable, I certainly didnt think it was as good a movie as Fleischer makes it seem. It had a lot of problems plot wise and character wise. I am glad I didnt pay to see it in the theater.

@minusman -

I'm in the minority that have not seen this flick.

"If anything, I would have changed the critics’ reaction to it."

Well, you'd actually have to change the movie to do that, man.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Why the hell should he have? Creators should be able to create without having to do everything that the comic book geeks want.

@rkshuttleworth - critics are geeks?

@rkshuttleworth - Then he shouldn't want to change the critics’ reaction to it.

@rkshuttleworth - Then deal with the backlash to your mediocre movie. Non comic book geeks thought the movie was trash. Pick one lol.

To be honest I think Venom like this is the best version of it. From a critical viewpoint I get it is bad, but as a comicbook flick it was quite enjoyable between all those others

Well then you should have put out a better movie. That's on you, bud, not the critics.

Dude, get over yourself, while Venom himself did look pretty great in a few scenes, the movie was [frick]ING GARBAGE. Sorry dude, but you know, you can just take that as I have an agenda, and not that it's what I truly felt about the movie. I love Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed, but this movie [frick]ing SUCKED.

This guy sounds like Donald Trump, where he thinks that he's the greatest person in the world, and if anyone disagrees with him, it's some sort of conspiracy, and not what's 'reeally going on'...

Not to mention - you could change anything about your movie and you'd choose to change other people's reaction to it??!! Again, sir - a hearty [frick] You.

Definitely using the same cannon to fire both Ruben Fleischer and Todd Phillips into the sun. Beyond tired of people blaming everyone but themselves when people don't like their stuff.

And I just want to point out again that there's virtually no reason for Spider-Man and Venom to fight each other at this point beyond some random misunderstanding. All that great tension and drama from the Symbiote storyline is gone....like a turd, in the wind

And you're all wrong - and he's right!

"This movie was AMAZING!" - said the director, and nobody else.

Of course.. Your movie was badly received because people love to worship marvel movies because Nolan's trilogy wasn't well received as well as shazam, wonder woman, Logan, joker somewhat... It has nothing to do with the fact that "a turd in the wind" actually made it into the final product..

It's ok to be proud of what you made but also hold yourself accountable don't go saying asinine statements like that.

Had your movie come out in 2000 it would have been better received, maybe, but you released a dated comic book movie and thought because it was fun it'd be better received. I think we're long past that point

“I don’t know what they were expecting."

Like with most movies like this, I was expecting things like, I don’t know: well-done action scenes, funny jokes, good acting, a main character that doesn’t get on my nerves and I actually enjoy spending time with, a plot that I can follow and where I can keep track of everyone’s motivations, dialogue that isn’t cringe-inducing, and basic [frick]ing competence on the director’s part.

And I didn’t get any of that with Venom.

Good. I liked Venom, I love the MCU Spider-Man... put them together with a solid script and let’s roll.

Ugh. Can you imagine having no sense of self-reflection and looking back on Venom and defending it?

I have very little respect for this filmmaker.
