VENOM Will Be A Horror Film While SILVER & BLACK Goes Down The Buddy Route; New Plot Details Revealed

Venom and Silver & Black directors Ruben Fleischer and Gina Prince-Bythewood reveal major new details about each movie, while a Sony exec addresses those rumours about a Kraven the Hunter spinoff...

Spider-Man: Homecoming was a triumph but Sony remains intent on moving forward with spinoffs not set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or even in a world where the wall-crawler exists). It's hard to say how that's going to work out for them but considering the fact they hold the rights to around 900 Marvel characters - a figure now confirmed by Variety - they have a whole hell of a lot of options.

Apparently, each of these movies is going to be very different; some could go the R-Rated route while others will have much lower budgets and Venom is viewed by the studio as a horror film, while Silver & Black is being compared to buddy films like Midnight Run and Thelma & Louise. Worlds apart then!

"I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive," says director Gina Prince-Bythewood who went on to say that after exploring the origins of each character, it seems their decisions have ties to the role played in their lives by their parents. So, daddy issues? Who knows, but Columbia Pictures' Sanford Panitch is excited about this direction. "It’s not so much that characters have a cape and fly. In “Silver & Black,” these two women are modern and cool. … They may wear costumes, but [they’re] very real and very grounded."

Venom, meanwhile, will be helmed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer and he has some very interesting ideas about where to take Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock. "I’ve always been drawn to the more antihero superheroes. There’s a dark element to [Venom] and a wit that has always appealed to me." The film is set to delve into the character's origin story (sans Spider-Man?) and the Jekyll and Hyde relationship Brock has with the alien symbiote. "They become almost a third being, which is what Venom is. There’s a famous quote: ‘You’re Eddie Brock. I’m the symbiote. Together we are Venom.’"

Panitch adds to that by emphasising Venom's horror roots and stating that it will draw on the work of Jfilmmakers like John Carpenter and David Cronenberg while delivering "more pop and fun." He won't be tied down to confirming a Spider-Man appearance, though, stating: "If we get lucky enough to make more than one [Venom film] and continue the franchise, there are lots of opportunities."

He's just as vague when it comes to Kraven the Hunter too as the studio exec would neither confirm nor deny plans for him to get his own solo movie. "He’s an awesome character," Panitch says. "Let’s just leave it at that." What do you guys think? As always, share your thoughts in the usual place.

I'm liking the horror aspect but can't help but feel irritated that it exists without Spider-Man.

@chewie - And this:

"He's just as vague when it comes to Kraven the Hunter too as the studio exec would neither confirm nor deny plans for him to get his own solo movie. "He’s an awesome character," Panitch says. "Let’s just leave it at that.""

Extremely irritated. These bastards will try to sneak an Aunt May movie in. I don't put it past them.

@chewie - I'd rather have a Kraven story than Venom if Spidey isn't there

@MitchConner - Not a great fan of Kravens Last Hunt. Thought it was really bizarre with him eating spiders, running around naked chasing spidey, and fighting a mutant spider and eating that too but the character focus on kraven was amazing. Not a fan of the ending either, felt half ass compared to killing joke where they went all the way through with the authors true intentions because it wasn't canon.

@Luminus - Kraven is someone who actually can work without Spidey as Kraven is first and foremost a hunter.
Venom, at least Eddie Brook Venom, can't because his entire motive is revenge on Peter.

Luminus - 9/11/2017, 12:41 AM
@shadowspider9 - Kraven is only relevant because he wanted to hunt Spider-Man. Who cares if he hunts someone else?

@Luminus - I'm just saying you can use Kraven and don't have to completely alter his backstory like you do with Venom.
Doesn't mean he's interesting on his own. Just that he can work without Spiderman being part of his story.

That about Venom sounds great but without Spider-Man being a main part of Venom’s origin that shit can’t get anybody hyped.

@MrFridayNights - I'm hyped. I bet they make it a few years after Peter is out of college. By the time Spidey 3 comes out it will be connected. Brock will be in prison because of the mess with Spidey and meet Kasady and pass on Carnage. From my understanding Venom origin is more from the Ultimate Universe. So he will have ties with Peter via his Father.

@MrFridayNights - to play devils advocate everyone just loved a spidey movie with no mention of uncle ben which is a large part of spideys origin and the death of uncle Ben and his responsibility for it played no part in Homecoming

@EnnisFan - There are few differences there.
1: We did get a line about Ben teaching him the responsibility thing in Civil War, so it wasn't cut out all together.
2: Spidey's orign at this point is as well known as Batman's. Everyone going to that movie knew the Uncle Ben thing by heart. Not true with Venom where really only comic fans and those that have watched one the cartoons know how he's tied to Spidey.
3: The uncle Ben thing is only important to the origin. After that you only need bring him up if you want to remind the audience of his driving motivation. With Venom his desire to kill Peter is an ongoing goal. It's like a Joker movie without mentioning Batman, or a Doom movie without mentioning Reed.

I am ready for nothing to come out of this. I've been through three Venom attempts and, while I gotta admit this made it the furthest, I will not be surprised if this fails. Almost hope it does. I'd love for Venom to come naturally to the MCU and not this...vague crap.

@osideous - Please remind me when Spider-Man 3 was a Venom movie? Cause last I checked the LACK of Venom was one major criticism. GTFOH.
RolandD
RolandD - 8/10/2017, 10:00 AM
@Retribution13 - I would say the opposite. Venom was shoe-horned into that movie against Raimi's better judgment (and let's just try to forget emo-Parker). He should have been THE villain in a Spider-Man movie if used at all.

If they make it in the style of the one shot from a few years ago I can get on board with the Venom horror movie. Spider-Man should most definitely exist though. Even if we only see mentions of him on newspapers. Hard to trust Sony though. Bad track record
