Nearly five years ago, Microsoft, in an effort to bolster the Xbox One's "all-in-one" tagline, announced a live-action
Halo television show as part of the company's TV programming initiative. It was to be developed in collaboration with legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg. But as Microsoft transitioned away from the "all-in-one" system and began focusing more on games, the
Halo show has sort of fallen to the wayside. So what's the status of the long-awaited show?
According to Showtime executives speaking to
TV Guide, it's still very much in the works.
More specifically, Showtime President and CEO David Nevins said the
Halo TV series is
"still in very active development," and that he has seen scripts for it.
Gary Levine, President of Programming at Showtime, added that the show
"is absolutely still in development, still moving forward and I'm encouraged by what we've seen so far." Levine couldn't offer any solid details regarding timeframe for when we might see the show debut, but did tease,
"It's still live action, and it will definitely satisfy the fans of Halo and I think also satisfy the drama audiences of Showtime."
Halo has a long history of live-action adaptations. Most notable was the mini web series
Halo: Forward Unto Dawn, which consisted of five 15-minute episodes released weekly. It was produced as a marketing effort to widen the Microsoft's audience leading up to the release of
Halo 4 on Xbox, and was met with generally warm reception. More importantly, it gave fans a taste of what we could expect from a live-action adaptation of Xbox's flagship series.
