Live-Action ZELDA Movie Director Wes Ball Wants The Film To Be "Serious" Yet "Whimsical"

Following the success of the Super Mario Bros. film, Nintendo is now allowing Hollywood to use its IPs, as Wes Ball will be directing a live-action Legend of Zelda film next.

Following the announcement of a live-action Zelda film in November, director Wes Ball has made it clear that he's very serious about the project. According to Ball's comment below, fans of the long-running Nintendo game should not anticipate a campy action film.

Said Ball, "I have this awesome idea. I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be... I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape. That’s the thing I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical."

After the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, failed, Nintendo (rightfully) shunned Hollywood for several decades. But in 2023, Nintendo released an animated Super Mario Bros. film with a production budget of $100 million, earning $1.362 billion worldwide.

And following such a huge box office haul, the video game developer is not only looking to dominate the animated film genre as Zelda will be a live-action adaptation.

Previously, Ball indicated that his ambition for the project is to create a live-action Studio Ghibli motion picture.

When previously describing his vision for the movie, the  Maze Runner director stated, "this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing. I've always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that."

Nintendo and Sony are co-producing the movie with Derek Connolly penning the script.

However, back in December, the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director cautioned that the live-action Legend of Zelda movie is still very early in development and that he's uncertain if it will be the next thing that he films.

"We’re working on the script, and whether it’s the next one or not, it’s hard to say exactly,. But certainly the plan is, after Apes is done, to have a little bit of a rest for a moment, and then dive into [Zelda] and hopefully give fans what they’re hoping for, and also invite new people in. I think Nintendo's desire is to introduce people to this world that’s been around for 40 years now."

The Zelda franchise primarily focuses on Link, a young Hylian man chosen by fate to defend the land of Hyrule from the evil wizard Ganon. Zelda, the princess of Hyrule, is a cunning and strong young monarch who wields the Triforce of Wisdom, one of three great holy relics.

The story's fundamental conflict is the ongoing battle between Link and Ganon for possession of the Triforce and other sacred relics. Ganon intends to use their power to control Hyrule, but Link often works with Zelda to protect the land and its people.

That headline makes it sound not like how he means.

@BritishMonkey - “ Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical."

Can’t be any more direct than that.

@MarkJulian - Sounds like The Mummy meets Lord of the Rings

@MarkJulian - True.
I mean that hearing what he says he means to deal with it seriously and treat it as such. Internet being the internet they'll focus more on the serious part and overlook the whimsy bit and misinterpret that.

@BritishMonkey - i wouldn't be surprised if studio ghibli films like princess mononoke will be his main influence given the serious yet fun and whimsical nature he wants.

@CaptainFlapjaks - Would be a smart idea. Guess there's a reason why so many go for a Ghibli inspired Zelda film. It fits very well.

@CaptainFlapjaks - I wouldn’t call Mononoke “fun,” but wouldn’t mind that being an influence.

@MG0019 - sad story but an enjoyable fun experience. Im not in a bad/downer mood after watching mononoke

These are opposites.

TheVisionary25 - 3/23/2024, 5:25 PM
@Drace24 - yes but you can still incorporate multiple colors & tones into a film

Life isn’t just one thing , you can have serious moments and whimsical moments.
Drace24
Drace24 - 3/23/2024, 5:29 PM
@TheVisionary25 - When you say it's one thing but also that thing's exact opposite, you are not actually saying anything.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/23/2024, 5:35 PM
@Drace24 - I disagree

I think you are saying that you are trying to incporate much like life , multiple tones which while tricky can work.

@Drace24 - Just off the top of my head, Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Wonder Woman, The Empire Strikes Back, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, The Third Man, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic.... (I could go on) were all serious and cool but with fun and whimsy.

@TheVisionary25 - You can philosophize about life as much as you want. At the end of the day this statement tells me absolutely nothing.
Drace24
Drace24 - 3/24/2024, 10:03 AM
@ObserverIO - ...That's what I mean. Almost every movie could be described like this. It could mean everything and nothing. It's a pointless statement. What is there still to debate?

If you thought the sh*tstorm of people hating Chris Pratt’s Mario voice was bad, wait until we find out that Link can talk in this movie.

@SummersEssex - I think they already announced he would, or maybe that was back when it was gonna be a streaming show.

So will they go all Roger Rabbit when they do the smash bros movie

Or was the idea of a shared universe scrapped?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/24/2024, 4:41 AM
@dracula - Maybe characters will movie in and out of animation, like in James Gunn's DC, Arrowverse, The Matrix, the Nolanverse, even the MCU.

So Chris Pratt as Mario? mm maybe not.

Cool!!.

While I haven’t played the games , I do hope this turns out well not just for the fans but Wes aswell since he seems genuinely passionate about it …

Going by what I know , he seems to understand the tonality of the series which is good at the least.

Anyway , hopefully KOTPOTA will be a good indicator of his skills as a director so fingers crossed (haven’t seen his Maze Runner films)!!.

I also wish he got to do his Mouse Guard film that was sadly cancelled…

The demo footage he made seemed real cool!!.

Hopefully that can be revived in the future.

If it was up to me, this movie should look up to old school fantasy adventure movies like The NeverEnding Story, The Labyrinth, The Legend and Dark Crystal for inspiration.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/23/2024, 5:52 PM
@FinnishDude - obviously the main inspiration should be the games but yeah , those are good filmic templates for it.

They have that serious yet whimsical tone he’s talking about (atleast imo).

Just give me a Metroid movie.

@thewanderer - Metroid in live action would be amazing. Which actress should play her?
thewanderer
thewanderer - 3/23/2024, 10:05 PM
@Timerider - I’m really not sure. I know Brie Larson has been campaigning for the role for years.

Ana Taylor-Joy would also be interesting.

Metroid was created as an homage to the Alien franchise. It would be cool to have a movie with the same kind of feel. I can’t imagine they’d go Rated R with it, but you could easily do PG-13.
Timerider
Timerider - 3/23/2024, 10:24 PM
@thewanderer - I don’t think they would go that dark for Metroid, instead, more like Star Wars or The Last Starfighter feel, not like Aliens. It’s more PG-13 than a R rated movie.

I have no idea who they would cast, it depends on the script and director. Maybe someone like Chloe Grace Moretz, or someone in their mid 20’s.

I'm still not sold on any live action Zelda. But I'm glad that he's very confident in his vision.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/23/2024, 7:34 PM
@RedSheep - agreed. Think it could really have thrived with a unique animation style. Maybe that's where the whimsical comes in though with the live-action

@bkmeijer1 - Animation would have been fine, but live action is gonna be epic AF.

bkmeijer1 - 3/24/2024, 10:00 AM
@ObserverIO - for me it really depends what road they're taking. Could be good, could be bad
Kadara
Kadara - 3/23/2024, 6:27 PM
I think that's what they went for with the Prince of Persia movie, didn't turn out so well. Can't believe they won't just take the safe path and animate this.

bkmeijer1 - 3/23/2024, 7:35 PM
@LSHF - everything and nothing, and some will act like their vision is the right (and only) way to go about it.
