Following the recent announcement teaser, NetherRealm has debuted an equally brutal new gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, giving fans a first glimpse at some of the game's fighters in action.

Things start off tame enough as a few familiar faces reconnect for some typically cheesy interactions, but once Kombat really gets going, the bone-crunching, blood-spurting, skull-smashing fatalities come hard and fast.

There are quite a few new finishing moves on display, along with even more violent twists on some classics. Keep watching right to the end, and you'll see Sub-Zero's signature spine-rip move has returned!

Check out the gameplay trailer below.

NetherRealm’s genre-defining Story Mode returns with an immersive cinematic narrative featuring unexpected twists on classic rivalries and original backstories for a wide-ranging cast of legendary fighters, including Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others. Mortal Kombat 1 will also introduce Kameo Fighters, a unique roster of partner characters that can assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players.

“With Mortal Kombat 1 we are bringing a reimagined universe to the legendary franchise which has captivated gamers for more than 30 years and continues to top itself,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. “The talented team at NetherRealm Studios continues to push the series forward in bold ways that have consistently expanded the global audience, and we believe Mortal Kombat 1 will continue to attract new players as well as thrill our core fans.”

“Mortal Kombat 1 marks a new beginning for the franchise and we couldn’t be more excited to share this original storyline and fresh take on classic characters with our fans,” added Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer, NetherRealm Studios and Co-Creator of Mortal Kombat. “We’re also introducing our Kameo Fighter system which brings a unique roster of partner characters into the mix, and we are looking forward to showing this feature as well as more new elements of the game very soon.”

Starting tomorrow, May 19, Mortal Kombat 1 will be available for pre-order on all launch platforms.

Gameplay was underwhelming, ngl. I’ll stick with Street Fighter 6

@PlusUltra - I'm going to ask. What did you find underwhelming in the gameplay! I Honestly like the tag assist, especially if it leads into/continues a combo. A lot better than Street Fighter 6. But that's favoritism I think.

@DCfan84 - All of it. They spent 4 years on what looks like 11 DLC with a shitty looking tag assist system. They didn’t even update the character models. Bare minimum effort from the devs, and this is why MK isn’t taken seriously.

@PlusUltra - Yea, I respect your opinion and agree with some of it. But they're building a brand new universe. To me, Mortal Kombat X was the best of the trilogy. The fighting style, the unlimited combos, to the DLC Characters. I kinda wish they brought all that back. The fighting style in this is very similar to Mortal Kombat 11, which to me was the worst of the NRS series.

@PlusUltra @dcfan84 - I've loved the mortal kombat games and lore since mk2.
But I can never stick with it because the controls style is so stiff. It doesn't look like that's changed here. Just a focus on remembering long combos and nothing shown on how to counter or pull a reversal. Other than the tag team mechanic, I am not seeing any evolutions of the gameplay

@Vigor - IDK, I feel like combos and reversals are a learned mechanic. I Love going into Practice Mode, learning combos and reversals, then using them in game. I think if it were too easy (not stiff), then it wouldn't be that fun at all. I like how you HAVE to learn the character, instead of just having straight designated combos that are relegated to designated button pushing. There is no "Set Combos", and your free to learn your own style. Just my opinion of course

@PlusUltra - See, I don't care for Street Fighter 6. The new Drive Impact system completely ruins the game, in my opinion.

It would have been fine of it was a mechanic that could only be used a time or two in a match. But it makes the entire match all about using Drive Rush and Drive Impact.

A mechanic that gives your character almost unbreakable armor so you can just attack through your anything your opponent is doing without worrying about your attack failing.

It's a very poor mechanic and takes away all the strategy of poking through your opponents' defenses to land a combo, instead just allowing you to smash two buttons together for a combo starter.

Like I said, it would have been fine if it was a limited use mechanic. But as long as you parry here and there you can use Drive pretty much at will throughout the whole game. So it makes it a Drive Impact/Rush race to see who can hit their Drive buttons and counter it.

This is not a Street Fighter game anymore. This is something else.

@CorndogBurglar - I agree with you. The drive reversal needs to be needed. People are able to spam it. When in reality it should be a more limited ability

@Vigor - Thats the thing. And the fact that if you're playing someone even halfway decent, if they land Drive Impact, which is very easy to do, then they hit you with a 60% damage combo.

This isnt what Street Fighter should be about.

@PlusUltra - I'm genuinely confused by your comment. One of the leading talking points following the first two trailers is the fact that they very clearly changed literally every character model. The faces look 100% different from the last game (just as the last one had different models from the game prior).

Also confused about your statement about it not being taken seriously. Not taken seriously by whom? Every MK game sells like crazy & wins a bunch of awards. If you don't like it, that's certainly your right to have an opinion, but at least base it in some modicum of fact.

Injustice 3 should have came out 2 years ago, especially when Conroy was still with us.

@CoHost - NRS had a new game engine to work with not to mention a pandemic that damn near slowed everything to a halt. Ed Boon said himself had they done Injustice 3 first, there wouldn't be another MK until 2025 or 2026. They did not want to have that big a gap between MK games. He's indicated that Injustice 3 would be next on their to-do list.

@AscendedExtra - That's all understandable but how can they continue the story when one of the premier voice actors in the games is gone? It'd be jarring to hear the replacement.

AscendedExtra - 6/16/2023, 11:12 AM
@CoHost - It may be jarring to you to hear a different voice (Conroy was my Batman, too) but his passing has no bearing on what story they tell.

It's time to retire the sister sites, it doesn't matter anymore. Also No Hard Feelings tickets just went live for AMC, the others should go live around 10

Can’t wait to play. Love the emphasis more on Air Kombos, no more silly armor with Fatal Blow attacks to give scrubs an advantage. Kameos are a little off putting at first but the capabilities for so many kombos in game and for more pop ups, make it worth it. I can’t wait.

I wish they went back to the 3D fighting like Mortal Kombat Deception just to mix it up.
