The Mortal Kombat franchise is still one of the most popular video game properties, but in recent years, the series has found success in the animated realm as well.

Warner Bros. Animation's Legends franchise is a hit with fans of the games and another instalment, titled Cage Match, is set to be released later this year. Kicking off in 2020 with Scorpion's RevengeBattle of the Realms and Snow Blind later followed.

As we first revealed on Toonado.com, this instalment will be helmed by Ethan Spaulding, while Jeremy Adams - who penned the previous three instalments - returns as screenwriter. Rick Morales, meanwhile, once again serves as supervising producer.

In terms of the confirmed cast list, we're sure you'll agree this makes for impressive reading:

  • Joel McHale (Community) as Johnny Cage
  • Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) as Herself
  • Dusan Brown (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as Chuck Golden
  • Grey DeLisle (Teen Titans Go!) as Kia
  • Robin Atkin Downes (Constantine - The House of Mystery) as Shinnok
  • Zehra Fazal (Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe) as Jataaka
  • Gilbert Gottfried (Aladdin) as David Doubldy
  • Kelly Hu (X2: X-Men United) as Ashrah
  • Matt Yang King (Elemental) as Concierge
  • Phil LaMarr (Futurama) as Brian Van Jones
  • Matthew Mercer (Resident Evil: Death Island) as Director/Bully
  • Dave B. Mitchell (Call of Duty) as Raiden
  • Armen Taylor (Justice Society: World War II) as Master Boyd

Yes, you read that correctly: Jennifer Grey and Gilbert Gottfried are indeed part of Cage Match's cast!

"Neon lights... Suits with shoulder pads... Jumping from explosions in slow motion... In 1980s Hollywood, action star Johnny Cage is looking to become an A-list actor," reads the synopsis. "But when his costar, Jennifer, goes missing from set, Johnny finds himself thrust into a world filled with shadows, danger, and deceit."

"As he embarks on a bloody journey, Johnny quickly discovers the City of Angels has more than a few devils in its midst. He faces off against a sinister secret society plotting a nefarious scheme, but the brutal fight against the bloodthirsty warriors of the Netherrealm is just beginning."

"Can Johnny, alongside other Kombat legends, save humanity...and, more importantly, his career?"

You can take a first look at Johnny Cage in action below, and it looks like the movie will definitely have a lot of fun with 1980s-inspired imagery.

As noted, Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match is set to be released later this year.

@CamtonoOfBeskar - over a year ago, some of these are recorded long in advanced

like the animated Batman Hush, had Peyton List as Poison Ivy, she also played the role on Gotham

according to her she recorded the movie before she was cast on Gotham but the movie didn't come out until she had already been on Gotham for 2 seasons and the show was over

Remember first being introduced to Gilbert as a child watching are you afraid of the dark.

It's so weird to see another person from childhood television gone.

Oh, wow. They're adding Johnny Cage's Master Boyd from the original film.

I'm not the biggest fan of this artstyle, but I like all the Mortal Kombat movies so far so I'll for sure check this one out too

@bkmeijer1 - How was the most recent, Snow Blind? I lazily skipped it and perhaps I shouldn't have. Loved all the other Legends movies.

@Whoelsebutkevin - it is the weakest one imo. It was still fun, but really felt far removed from Mortal Kombat lore and what I'm used to from Mortal Kombat.

Sounds like a Mortal Kombat take on Big Trouble in Little China.
