MORTAL KOMBAT: WWE Superstar The Miz On Losing Johnny Cage Role To THE BOYS Star Karl Urban

Mortal Kombat movie concluded by setting the stage for Johnny Cage to appear in the upcoming sequel, while we later discovered that The Boys star Karl Urban will play the fan-favourite character.

It's a strange casting decision in many ways, and while we have no doubt he'll put a fun spin on Cage, Urban wasn't exactly a fan-favourite choice heading into the sequel. In fact, there were an awful lot of Mortal Kombat fans online who pushed for WWE Superstar The Miz to bring the Hollywood star-turned-brawler to life on screen.

Talking to ComicBook.com (via TheRingReport.com), The Miz revealed that he loved the first Mortal Kombat film and immediately knew he wanted to play Johnny in the follow-up.

"My name was trending with Johnny Cage. And I was like, 'Oh my God.' It wasn't a bunch of people. It was my name. And I was like, This is crazy," he recalls. "I remember calling my agent and going, 'Dude, I want this. I don't know what I have to do. Call whoever you have to call. I want this bad.'"

"I went out on every interview and every time someone asked me about this question, I would say, 'I want to be Johnny Cage. I want to be Johnny Cage.' I never got an audition, which is fine. I mean, maybe they just didn't see me as the character."

Admitting he wasn't too angry to learn Urban had nabbed the role, The Miz believes his fellow actor will "work as hard as I will work to make sure that that character is honed in, locked in, and is the character that the audience wants and loves."

Despite not finding the same level of Hollywood success as the likes of The Rock, Dave Bautista, and John Cena, The Miz still has acting aspirations but is currently focused on his pro wrestling career.

"My goal right now is to be the best WWE Superstar I can be, and I've been having a blast with this new wave and new crop of youth that WWE has," he says. "And to be honest, our shows at live events, at RAW have all been sold out. WWE is so hot right now."

Mortal Kombat 2 stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Noob Saibot, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.

New cast additions include Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.

Mortal Kombat 2 doesn't currently have a confirmed release date.

They wanted star power
And Karl urban is a seasoned actor. Perhaps this means Johnny cage has a meaty role

@Vigor - hopefully he takes the spotlight over Cole, who was still the worst part in MK21.
Still a shocker to me how they sidelined Liu-Kang and Kung Lao for him, despite both actors being really good (compared to Lewis Tan, who tried but...y'know)

@Vigor - except he jsut isnt jonny Cage. Miz suits the character way more.

Classy reaction, I almost regret calling him a too limited actor for this role but it's a non-personal statement. Maybe in the future he hones in his chops and proves that his "Marine"-days have served to improve his skills.

Anyways, I'm happy with Urban. He's not my first (or second) choice but he's a fine actor that will do a great job.

The Miz should've left WWE years ago. He's a great heel. But he's underused and wasted.

@PartyKiller - he did try to branch out, he did four "The Marine" sequels and a few episodes of network TV shows (Supernatural, Sirens and Psych) but that didn't pan out into a John Cena/The Rock/Randy Couture type acting career.

Karl Urban is there to get more audience draw. I'm so used to The Boys, I'm actually looking forward to hearing him put on an American accent again, haha. Everyone's going to keep saying it up until the release (or at least trailers) that he doesn't seem right for the part, but once he starts getting good and bloody, and we know he's gonna flash that mighty grin of his, well if the movie has faults (it will), Urban likely won't be the problem.

Let’s just say the world is better off with Karl Urban as Cage than the Wizz. Or at least earth realm is better off.

These are both miscasts. They should go with Tanner Buchannon.

@Forthas - Tanner is only 24 y.o. It wouldn't look right when Johnny Cage is trying to hook up a 35 y.o. Sonia Blade ;)

@sparkadv - Good point. I wish they had cast a younger woman in that role.

Love Karl Urban but don't think he is right for Johnny Cage.

Also, at the age he is at, wiTh how many years it takes between sequels & spin offs & now even more so with however long the strikes are going to last, I don't now why hey went with somebody at his current age unless they're planning a one & done for this movie, or, they're jumping to the likes of Cassie & the Kombat kids as quickly as possible to present a bit of a different take eventually.

And although he's a few years younger, I still had issues even with Miz getting a shot at the role as I feel it should be someone younger than him if Johnny Cage is to be around for a few movies to come.

On paper, Karl is a better choice. We'll see about the execution.

I think Jensen Ackles would've been a much better choice for Johnny Cage.

"Following Mortal Kombat's release, WWE Superstar The Miz quickly emerged as a fan-favourite choice to play Johnny Cage."

Let's ignore the above statement for a min, as Josh ignored his research before claiming that out of thin air!

When it comes to acting on a scale of 1 to 10, if I put Karl Urban at 10, The Miz in my books would be at minus 5.
