Should WB create a connected DC universe through video games?

What would you rather have? A connected video games? Or movies? Which is the better choice?

So in the light of the new Arkham game I've been thinking of other DC related games. Then the thought popped up in my head " what if DC did what marvel did with the MCU but with video games." That means we would get a Batman game( or we could just make the Arkham games cannon), a flash game, an aqua man game, a superman game, and a WW game. If we follow the Marvel formula we can then top it all off with a JLA game.

So is this approach a better option than films for WB? Or are movies a safer bet than video games?

In my opinion I think creating a connected video game universe would be beneficial to WB, both financially and overall publicly. By creating a shared video game universe WB is making a new battlefront in the so called DC vs. marvel war( if you're into that). Marvel currently is not competing with DC when it comes to video games other than TASM2 game. So what this does is allow DC to rule one medium and do something that has never been done in video games before. However, will this be financially beneficial? Yes, but only if DC builds it's brand.

Building a brand

Marvel studios has found tremendous success because it built it's brand so well. People see captain America and Thor and they see marvel studios. People expect a certain quality out of marvel studio films, they are familiar with the movies so they spend money on it. Same with call of duty. A key factor in building these brands is, annual release. Every year we expect a marvel movie, every year we expect a call of duty game. DC needs to adopt this tactic. Sure not everyone has a gaming console. However, video games can be extremely profitable if, like I've said, they build a brand. WB can enjoy a lot of success in the video game industry if they make it known what they're doing.

So who will make these games?

Rocksteady and WB Montreal. Rocksteady gets a game one year and WBM gets one for another. It will help speed up the process and build the brand. Rocksteady should be the primary developer however. Rocksteady is going to be in charge, they would develop the JLA game.

What would you prefer?

Alright so here's my question. If you were in charge of WB/DC what would be your move? In your opinion is a connected video game universe a good idea? Would you push for it? Or would you stick with the crowd and make a movie universe? Sound off below!

I hope so. They should make Flash, Green Arrow, Suicide Squad, and Superman games over the next few years. I'd buy them, even if it was a yearly title.

Yup, sucide squad game is in the works, I think green arrow could be also. If they do the SS game they should adopt the GTAV Game mechanics.

I think that's exactly what is happening. A while back, Geoff Johns spilt the beans on a Suicide Squad video game. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate pretty much confirmed that the game will take place in the Arkhamverse by setting the game and it's roster up. Also there have been other easter eggs of other characters in Arkham games like a Queen Industries easter egg in the Arkham Origins trailer, CADMUS easter egg in Arkham City, Black Canary reference in Arkham City, The Creeper was set up in Arkham Asylum and City, Bludhaven mentioning in Arkham City, ETC.

How crazy would it be if a JL member popped up in Arkham Knight and that led to a JL game by Rocksteady.

@Moohika I'd say that having Superman pop up setting up an eventual Superman game is a pretty likely scenario. Especially if Rocksteady wants to take a break from Batman, they'd probably want to tackle another character that would play completely differently.

I think if rocksteady wants to make a game that plays completely differently than they should make a flash game. A flash game would be so unique if they did it right. However, it's so hard to pull off though. How can they make a game that involves super speed and not make it repetitive? If they do a superman game it should be him fighting Metallo. A GL game could adopt some mechanics from Bioshock Infinte. Sort of like the tears in Infinte GL can summon a machine gun on a wall or a barrier between enemies. Wonder women would take place on paradise island, it could play like Ryse but more expanded and less repetitive. But flash? Idk, other than running so fast to slow down time I can't see anything working out. I might just replace GL with flash, it would be a lot better

I think they should so both really. And if the movie sucks I'll go on YouTube and watch the cutscenes put together.

I Personally love these high detailed, long story RPGs.
its not like most games that have online and their campaign is usually 4-5 hours.

in the batman games its much longer (took me days to finish AA and AC stories)
and to top it all off, the story is like barely 2/3 of the game, there's still much more to do in free roam.

with the AK map being x5 bigger than AC's map, I'm expecting like some GTA 5 size Gotham, along with switchable characters between Nightwing and robin (similar to how you change in GTA)

As for other games I'd do
Flash: game based on central city, with a gorilla grodd city take over. (I personally have a bias for gorillas since they're one of my favorite animals) the trickier part about this game though would probably be the game mechanics.

Superman: Story based in metropolis, could go with any story, but if its going to be a luthor story, it needs to be very good and complex, otherwise it'll feel dull since we've gotten luthor so much in movies, shows, etc.

Green Lantern: This could be based in outer space, which makes map creating so much easier, and potential to be huge. although I'd probably make several maps on different location to suit the story. (I.e in one part of the story he's in a specific part of metropolis, but you dont get the whole metropolis in the game, just the part needed for the story, etc.) theres many story to go with here, such as Sinestro corps, red lanterns, etc. i just hope John Stewart is a playable character.

Justice League: in this game, this is where you go big, this is where you up the ante by so much more. this JL would be a culmination of ll other past games, put into 1. Here you would include all the cities (Gotham, Metropolis, Central city, Etc) available for freeroam for any JL character.
and you expanded into more maps. think of GTA 5's map going super saiyan.

and the JL game would need to be done last.
the previous individual game would serve as the "testing" grounds for new mechanics (I.e GL, Flash's and superman's mechanics)

and then add them all to the JL game. having most of the mechanics already done, it establishes a good ground work for JL to start working.

and if the Justice League had just met up, have Batman be the one to launch Project "Watch Tower" into Orbit.

NOTE: I Haven't listed other games, but i wouldn't mind if they added more games before JL like a Hawkman/Thanagar kind of game, or wonder woman.

With that said, WB needs to clamp down on their game developers and FORCE them to fix any game breaking bugs. I keep hearing lots of negative stuff regarding Arkham origins about how WB Montreal wont fix game breaking bugs in AO.

this is ridiculously UNACCEPTABLE, you CANNOT treat consumers with such blatant disrespect when they're the ones buying your product.

@Lhonbk
I care.

It would be a unique idea and situation to have movies and comics in the same continuity.
and Video games are certainly a profitable medium when done right (I.e. COD)

Batman: Arkham Asylum
+2 million Units sold in the first 3 weeks, 4.3 million overall.

Batman: Arkham City
+2 Million Units sold in the first week. Overall to date is unknown, but it was reported that over 6 million Units had been shipped out to stores by february of 2012.

Batman: Arkham origins
Estimated +1 million units sold within the first week, Estimated overall sales matching that of Arkham Asylum.

Most of these games cost $50-60 on retail for usually the first 3 months of release.

There's huge profits to be made via gaming medium.
Arkham City alone made over $120 million in the first week based on sales alone. these sales also dont include DLCs.

So from a business standpoint, it stands to reason they they would consider it.

With all the studios and resources WB has it would be a great idea to do this. Snowblind, monolith, Rocksteady, TT games, WB Montreal, and Netherealm could make games for each member of the JL and have on out each year. That would give great revenue to WB and also help establish their brand.

Movies and games*
bleh

@Manhunter
Wb has that many studios at its disposal?
dam...

It would certainly be interesting.
They could probably roll out a couple games for various characters.

Although Spacing is key if they're going to do this.
They dont want to put up they own games against each other in the same time span.
CaptainAmerica31
CaptainAmerica31 - 3/16/2014, 5:51 AM
@goldslayer true, spacing is key. Games aren't like movies. You can watch two movies in two days straight. It cost 60 bucks to get a game. No way someone spend 120 bucks on a game one week
