THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE Set For Year's Best Opening Despite Negative Reviews

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now in theaters, and the animated video game adaptation looks set for a massive box office opening... despite a disappointing 55% on Rotten Tomatoes!

Despite relatively positive social media reactions, the fact that the full review embargo only lifted the day before The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit theaters had fans worrying that the animated video game adaptation may not be up to snuff, and, so far, it seems those concerns may have been warranted.

The first reviews are in, and with 99 verdicts counted, the movie currently sits at a disappointing 54% on Rotten Tomatoes (audience score is a much better 98%, however).

Though the critics who did like it really seemed to enjoy it, the negative reviews point to lame, unfunny jokes, a nonsensical story, and, yes, awful voice acting from the cast.

The visuals did come in for a lot of praise, however, and it sounds like fans of the classic Nintendo games will be very happy with the amount of Easter Eggs sprinkled throughout the vast animated world.

Major IP-driven family films tend to be largely critic-proof, and Mario still looks set for one of the best box office openings of the year. The latest predictions point to the movie climbing as high as $225 million ($125M+ in U.S./Canada, and another $100M+ overseas).

Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the current 2023 boss with $225.3M, but most analysts seem to feel that the moustachioed plumbers will surpass that total.

This movie is going to kill it at the box office and kick start the NCU. It may not be the most inventive plot, but there is a huge market for this.

@mountainman - I’m just waiting for the Super Smash Bros universe. We already got a Pokémon and Sonic movie. And now Mario. Zelda and Metroid would be next.

@Arthorious - Pokémon and Sonic crossovers would be more difficult since the film rights are at different studios. I’m not saying it would never happen, but I’d predict that the Nintendo-owned characters will be prioritized.

@mountainman - To, I would love it if we got a Donkey Kong, Zelda, Metroid Prime movie and then an Avengers type of team up between them against some world ending threat, please let this come true 🙏

@mountainman - Oh yeah I know that this is a pipe dream like the rest of em (Would love a DC vs Marvel video game outside of MUGEN). But the idea is fun.

@vectorsigma - Same lol

But imma wait for it on VOD or streaming service. I already know there's going to be a lot of kids running around and crying babies in theaters. Don't mind it if the sound systems loud enough to drown all the noise, but if it doesn't then its a total mood killer.

So the consensus among reviewers is “It’s a dumb kid’s movie”?

I’m not exactly surprised. You don’t want into a Super Mario Bros animated film expecting Citizen Kane.

@santoanderson - Yeah, because its not possible to make a kids movie which is also a timeless masterpiece. It has to be dumb as [frick]. Welcome to 2023.

@Spawnnn - I’m quite sure that kids movies having basic plots is something that’s been going on for quite a long time.
GameOn
GameOn - 4/5/2023, 1:39 PM
@mountainman - But that doesn’t mean they can’t have amazing and emotionally complex stories. Lion King, Toy Story, and Finding Nemo are three off the top of my head that are great kids movies with inventive and moving stories.

@GameOn - Oh I agree. I’m not claiming it can’t be done. I am mainly speaking to box office performance here. With how much Minions 2 made last year, I think it’s clear that kids movies can perform very well even when they don’t have amazing writing or stories.

@Spawnnn - It's weird... it is almost like parents are capable of doing something with their kids without caring whether or not the parents personally enjoy it. Personally, I spent the movie watching my children laugh and smile the entire time. Best movie I have ever seen.

Retro nostalgia is one thing. Beating it into the ground is another.

Only way I see this is by being kidnapped by my Grandweasels.

Does the success of this movie possibly lead into a Smash Bros. movie franchise?
mountainman
mountainman - 4/5/2023, 12:18 PM
@WruceBayne - Yes but I see that being their “Avengers” level crossover. If this does well (which it likely will) I’d expect a sequel featuring the Mario Bros and a Donkey Kong movie being the first movies announced. Possibly (and hopefully) going deeper into the Nintendo catalog with Zelda and/or Metroid as well. Smash Bros would likely be the crossover event where the franchises collide.

@mountainman -

Bruh a Zelda movie would KILL.

I could see a DK movie or Zelda movie next.
mountainman
mountainman - 4/5/2023, 1:46 PM
@HulkisHoly - I think DK is the obvious choice since he is in this one. But yeah Zelda could be amazing if done well and I hope they do it soon.
