Mark Millar Briefly Updates The Status On Sequels To Wanted & Kick-Ass

While chatting with SUPER HERO HYPE about his recently debuted Kapow! Con, the topic of discussion changed to movie adaptions, in which Millar tackled the subject of the movie sequels to his graphic novel Wanted & his comic mini series Kick-Ass:

What's happening with the sequel to "Wanted"?

MM: "It's almost like a riddle. "Wanted" made so much money, but it cost $70 million but they made $250, so they want a sequel, but they killed off the reason that it made that money, so they're trying to figure out a way of bringing Angelina back from the dead, and they can't figure it out. Every month or so I'll talk to the guys at Universal, and they'll say ‘We'll talk to some screenwriters, we'll do another draft', and Angelina's like ‘my character's dead, I'm not coming back.' There's been two or three screenplays.

And "Kick-Ass 2"?

MM: "Kick-Ass 2," just not sure. We're all getting paid real money now, so it's really hard to get everyone back in the same room."

You're obviously now straddling both worlds between film and comics. Are you trying to spend more time making films?

MM: "No, no, no. I've got three new comic properties that I'm just doing instead. I don't want to write screenplays. The only screenplay I've attempted was "Miracle Park," because I knew I was directing that myself. I hate writing them to be honest; I like the finished product, but I hate the process."

@Superboy91 - The first Kick-Ass made less than $50 million in the US (and less than $100 million worldwide). I wouldn't call that a [frick]ing cash cow.

Here's an idea - it's gonna' sound real crazy, I know: just don't make a sequel.

Yeah, I know, if a film is really good or makes a lot of money, the first question on everyone's mind is, "When's the sequel coming out??" But how about bucking the trend? It would be crazy - the kind of thing Millar is known for.

Wanted was great and doesn't need a sequel and Kick-Ass was barely decent. Don't make anything other than Nemesis.

It's simple. Want to bring Angelina back? Prequel. With Wesley's dad as the main assassin, more of a team environment, leading up to his discovery of the conspiricy and leading up to the first movie.
If it HAS to be a sequel, the answer is simple: Don't use Angie, unless it has a non-linear narrative where parts are set in flashbacks, again meaning it'd be part sequel, part prequel, like the Godfather Pt. II.

Kick Ass 2 NEEDS to be done, it was set up perfectly for a sequel.

Kick ass 2 wont be made, clearly.

from all the little interviews to the creative team, none has any idea about it, so there isnt a real development.

and Matthew Vaughn wants a sequel to X-men First Class, and he will probably do two more... it seems he has move on from Kick ass.

I think it'd be good to wait till 2013/14 for production. Anyone who's started reading kick ass 2 will know its based around the superhero team up sort of thing. So let the avengers get out and kill the world with awesomeness and maybe development on a justice league film start, and it'd make such a bigger impact!

Kick Ass 2, or a Hitgirl spin off will be tits.

Wanted 2 I can live without. Wanted I liked and all, but didn't love. I love the graphic novel, dealing with super villains rather than assassins. Angelina butt though, thats a much different feeling entirely. If that doesn't get a green lite, I don't what does any more lolz.

Kick Ass did pretty bad at the box office because their trailers were heavily censored. It almost came off as a kiddy flick, when it was anything but. A huge chunk of the population never saw the intended trailers and only saw a joke of a movie. It was fun movie, that felt like a comic but real at the same time. Kick Ass's first fight looked real and messy. Hit Girl's scenes were insane. Big Daddy's scene was everything I imagine when I read Batman comics (minus the death). A sequel would be amazing but I am sure it wouldn't make much money.

Wanted was a decent movie, horrible comic book movie. It would make money, but would disappoint many viewers. Regardless of of what Miller discussed the sequel branching into, it will only hurt the franchise and probably confuse more people.

Nemesis would be a blast to watch, even if it didn't get a hard R rating. But if it comes out too close to TDKR or Justice League, people will only attack it. Plus a voice for the character isn't really established and people love to complain. So either really soon or way down the road it will or won't happen, but it remains the most reasonable film to make just based the fact that there is no set crew.

Any film that hits theatres with a part 2 attached to it has a shot compared to the many sequel abortions that go straight to DVD.

I am sure it will/would make more than the first. But I am sure the big wigs won't expect it to reach the desired numbers. Sequels have a way of doing surprising well or falling short. I just figured with that taken into consideration and the crew getting work elsewhere, actors wanting more money, fans nitpicking and time restraints, that the individuals who supply the budget may have their reserves. I tell people all the time when a movie does horrible at the box office but was actually amazing. Kick Ass always makes the list. I just think that if Millar made another movie, establishing that people want to see his characters, he could end up putting one or two every year for a bit. I want more Kick Ass, I am just concerned that if the sequel fails, they won't use other characters like Nemesis.

Hard to envision a Wanted sequel without Fox(Angelina Jolie). But she seemed pretty well dead at the end of the first one. It would be a real stretch to bring her back. But a *prequel* featuring the early career of Fox may fit the bill. Hard to imagine Angelina Jolie playing a much younger version of herself, though. Perhaps Megan Fox or Malin Ackerman could step into the role. Any other ideas about who could play a younger version of Fox?

I know the numbers. They are ok, but not impressive, and sequels don't always have the greatest success. It did awesome for its budget, but the biggest assumption is that it will make less money with the sequel. So giving them a bigger budget seems unlikely. Understand that I do want a sequel, but I have seen Hollywood's track record.
