Following the lukewarm response to X-Men: Apocalypse and Jennifer Lawrence seeming a little fed up with donning the blue paint again while doing press for the film, many assumed that she'd be bidding farewell to the role of shape-shifting mutant Mystique.

Of course, we now know that the Academy Award-winner will return for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and during a new interview with EW she reveals that Simon Kinberg taking the reigns of the franchise was one of the main reasons why.

“I kind of f—ed myself,” Lawrence jokes. “Because when I was trying to talk Simon into directing, he said something like, ‘If I direct it, you have to do it,’ and I was like, ‘Of course! Duh!’ Then they offered me the movie, and I was like, ‘Goddammit!'”

As it turns out, Lawrence was glad she did decide to come back:

“Acting-wise it was the best experience I’ve had [on these films]. He’s been writing these characters for so long and he knows them so deeply. I suddenly felt more connected to my character than I ever have been before.” Plus, the shoot was calm and fun, something that is not always the case with the X-Men films. “It was unrecognizable,” admits Lawrence. “Everything was on time. Everything was organized. These movies have always been fun amidst chaos, and now they were fun with no chaos.”

Tell us, are you happy to see Lawrence back as Mystique? What are your first impressions of X-Men: Dark Phoenix overall? Sound off below.

Lies, lies, lies...

Anything you are saying is probably complete lies.

The only reason you came back was the paycheck. Admit it.

Definitely the money. I mean, the biggest actress in the world is clearly going to struggle to find work without the X-Men.

@RorMachine - She plays too many sci fi and action movies (although passengers was good) and is too main stream. She should do more drama films, and more sidelined on other movies.

@Krampus - Well she did try that with mother!.. and that didn't work out too well, although she was excellent in it. I agree though that she's usually at her best in more dramatic stuff.

@RorMachine - Eh mother was more oscar bait thriller. I mean more small drama things with tinges of comedy, and side characters in bigger movies.

She has way more exposure than she deserves.

@Krampus - Oscar bait thriller? Did you see it? That movie was the furthest thing from Oscar bait it possibly could be.

@RorMachine - I'm sorry, i saw it, but i tried to erase it from my mind because a [frick]ing baby gets it head snapped (i'm kidding of course, i dont mind that sort of thing)

Still, i dont really think mother was the type of film i was talking about.

I meant more like silver lining. If you have seen it.

This is how she was "threatening" the Studio last year:
"“Fassbender and McAvoy and I were all talking. Like, ‘Will you come back?’ ‘I dunno.’ ‘I’ll come back, if you come back.’

"Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn’t come back, none of us are.”

She knows that not even the Fox guys gives a shit about her anymore, they just want Fass and McAvoy.
She's full of shit, and this stuff makes me hate her.

Makes sense...

Still, I hope she's not completely soured on the genre. (I want her for the MCU Emma Frost. No make-up this time, and a far more reduced antagonistic role at least at first, but she's got all the right pieces for a good complex White Queen.)

@Spock0Clock - No way! Keep her away from the MCU. She is box office poison.
