Simon Kinberg has been officially named as the director of X-Men: Dark Phoenix and in a new photo, Bryan Singer passes the torch to his frequent collaborator and promises "epic" things to come...

Despite embracing the comics in a way previous movies did not, X-Men: Apocalypse failed to strike a chord with critics and underperformed at the box office. X-Men: Days of Future Past was such a hit that many believed the follow-up would reach $1 billion, but with that not happening and Bryan Singer eyeing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, it's been obvious for a while that the next movie would have a different filmmaker at the helm. Well, that's now confirmed as being first time director Simon Kinberg.

In a new Instagram post, Bryan Singer has passed the torch to his longtime collaborator and promises that we're getting an "epic story" which is in "great hands." That's debatable, especially as the only thing Kinberg has reportedly directed are those disastrous Fantastic Four reshoots back in 2015.

We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out, but it's already been confirmed that X-Men: Dark Phoenix is going to take us into outer space with the introduction of the Shi'ar Empire. This will also be Kinberg's second crack at the iconic storyline after he dropped the ball in X-Men: The Last Stand.

I wasn't following the production for this closely and I didn't know Kinberg would be directing.

My hype for this just went downhill...

@DIAJINN - I can't begin to fathom how you can see Simon Kinberg directing this as better than Bryan Singer doing so.

@DIAJINN - Are you serious thinking Kinberg is a better choice than Singer?

LOL

@suitekid - I never thought I'd see the day, where I(as an X-Men fan) would say the following:GIMME SINGER BACK

I have absolutely no faith in this movie....which means I can only be extremely happy if it is miraculously good. I feel this movie is going to be F4ntastically bad.

@CaptDeadpool - You mean, Fant4stic-ly bad?

@kylo0607 - lol couldn't remember where the 4 went. Either way, that movie was just terrible.

@CaptDeadpool - You are wrong. It was a masterpiece and one of the most well-acted and visually stunning films I've ever seen.

@kylo0607 - hahhahahaha! The sad thing is, the cast was one of the best group of actors ever in a CBM and even they couldn't save that movie

@CaptDeadpool - I agree with most of that, although Kate Mara looks bland to me in almost everything and Teller has that punch-able face and is nothing memorable.

Although I've yet to see Whiplash. Hearing great things about him there.

@kylo0607 - hahahaha OMG! I actually hate Miles Tellers face too!!!!! He can act, but every time I see him in a movie I think "how the F$CK did this schmuck get famous???!"

X2 and DOFP were best in this serie.

I kinda feel like Singer just got bored at some point while making Apocalypse. So on the one hand, I'm kinda glad to see him taking a break so somebody else can come on board and try to breathe a little life into it and he can go do stuff he's more passionate about.

But on the other hand, the person taking over is somebody who's been with the franchise for a while but whose writing is generally hit or miss and has literally directed nothing other than MAYBE the reshoots on Fant4stic.

All I can hope for is that Kinberg may surprise us with his Directional debut. He clearly is more interested in the cosmic/ crazier stuff than Singer ever was. Or I could be utterly disappointed next year in the November.

@MrFurious93 - I completely agree. Considering he has never directed anything before we really can't judge his directing ability.
I take solace in the fact that he has been heavily involved in the franchise before and has clearly embraced the cosmic aspects with L'landra.
Would I have like an experienced director yes. But I'm not going to judge his directing befor I've seen it.

It was hard enough to defend the critically acclaimed X-movies as it is, but now...
I give up.

This is officially my least anticipated superhero movie of 2018. And there'll be [frick]ing 8 of them that year, so that is some kind of accomplishment.
Tasmaniac
Tasmaniac - 6/15/2017, 3:00 AM
Whelp, that's just [frick]ed it for me. There is no way on Gods green earth I will ever watch this movie. Kinberg and Ratner made my most hated CBM ever in X3. And I've seen Batman & Robin.

The only thing that hack is going to do with the torch he's been passed is to burn the X-Universe to the ground.

@Tasmaniac - the guy who wrote The Avengers wrote The Last Stand with Kinberg.

Whoa...Kindberg dropped the ball in Xmen Last Stand?
Get out of here with that.

Brett Ratner
Halley Berry
20th Century
Hugh Jackman

All jump into the volcano first for the responsibility of what Last Stand became before Kindberg.

@Elayem - He also wrote and produced DOFP didn't he. Its 50/50 gamble i guess.
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 6/15/2017, 6:23 AM
@Highflyer - That's true, but if you look closely, the two movies he's written that were good, DOFP and Sherlock Holmes, he was one of 3 and 5 writers respectively. The other movies: X-Men Apocalypse, Fant4stic, This Means War, Jumper, X-Men Last Stand, Mr & Mrs Smith, and xXx State of the Union, all bad movies.
He's a bad writer, and he's never directed before (save for the Fant4stic reshoots)

Good producer though.

@Elayem - Great... now my concern just went up for this film lol
