X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Won't Be Bringing Back This Character From X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

X-Men: Dark Phoenix looks set to be a huge instalment in the long-running franchise but director Simon Kinberg clearly wants to narrow his focus because one key character from the last movie won't return.

Despite jumping ahead another decade, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will serve as a direct sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse but that clearly doesn't mean we should expect to see the return of every single character from that movie. When we last saw CIA Agent Moira MacTaggert, she had had her memories restored by Charles Xavier and the two of them looked set to once again embark on a romantic relationship.

Well, if that's a plot thread you were hoping would be picked up on in the sequel from writer/director Simon Kinberg, you're going to be sorely disappointed! In a new interview, actress Rose Byrne has confirmed that while she enjoyed returning
as the character back in 2016, she's not coming back.

"Unfortunately, Moira is not showing up," she confirmed. "I wish she was. I had such fun on X-Men: Apocalypse. I love that cast. It is a really fun, what do you call it? Superhero film… ensemble exactly. I can’t wait to see what [Jessica Chastain] does, cause I’m such a fan." The movie will still have plenty of female characters and it should be interesting what explanation is offered for Moira's absence.

With the X-Men potentially heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, chances are we won't get to see Byrne's take on Moira again anyway but we're obviously going to have to wait and see for now.

I hope that DISNEY / MARVEL STUDIOS cancel that PHOENIX senseless project or when they produce an X-MEN movie about PHOENIX nobody will go to the theatre and pay for it.

The same story 2 times on screen and both of them so wrong

This movie will sorta be a ghost...the universe will be dead but it'll be seen.

... I don't care ...

I don't hate Rose Byrne or anything, but... if it were possible to negatively care about something, it would be "is the age-less non-Moira #3 going to be appearing in the last gasp of a likely dead franchise".

Alternatively... Kate Beckinsale for Lilandra? Anybody?

I love Rose Byrne so I would have liked to have seen her but I can’t really say I care much about what happens with X-men: Dark Phoenix.

I'm glad. I think her story was perfectly wrapped up in First Class.

I don't understand why she needed to return for Apolcypse. She didn't particularly add anything to the film, besides awakening Apocolypse; which could have been given to Magneto or even Mystique (which I feel would added to her not wanting to be a hero storyline, as she would feel guilt over releasing Apoclypse).

While I enjoy all the xmen films (besides Origins; nothing can save that) I think the issue has always been the casts are always too big for the film, resulting in many of the characters having reduced roles.
If Moria isn't needed for this film, there is no need to push her into it. I think this bodes well that they are focusing more on the young team and Jean for this film.
