Gambit was supposed to be released last October and you don't need us to tell you that never happened. The movie lost two directors in Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman, and most fans have been left convinced that it's now never going to become a reality. Well, according to producer Simon Kinberg, everyone remains committed to the project, particularly lead star, Channing Tatum.
"It's in active development," Kinberg said. "It's a movie that we hope will be ready to go by the end of this year and shoot next year. We have two or three X-Men related movies this year so it can wait for a moment. The process has been that Channing [Tatum] is as determined about getting the character right as Ryan Reynolds was about Deadpool and Hugh [Jackman] was about this Logan movie. We know that when we get those right, the movie succeeds so we want to make sure we get Gambit right because we want him to be the beginning of a whole new franchise."
That doesn't exactly sound good. If they need the rest of 2017 to get the movie in shape, the original screenplay must have been a complete mess despite the fact it was based on a Chris Claremont treatment. It was also reported at one point that Fox wanted some action scene cut to save money.
So, Gambit is apparently happening, but with shooting not set to begin until next year, it obviously won't reach theaters until 2019. For now, though, it's probably best to take a wait and see approach here. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments section.
