Even though producer Lauren Shuler Donner seems pretty certain that she's found her new Gambit in Channing Tatum, the actor still hasn't officially signed on to play the role -- though while talking to MTV he admits that things are starting to "chug forward". Rumors suggested that should Tatum sign on, that he'd appear as Remy LeBeau in the upcoming
X-Men: Apocalypse, but it sounds as if the conversation has actually been leaning towards a solo outing for the card-charging mutant first.
“I’ve been pretty vocal about wanting to be the part of Gambit for a very long time. It's a weird, pinching-myself moment that we're even having the conversation. We've talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”
That's all very well, but could Gambit sustain his own solo adventure? The character was pretty popular at one point, but over the years many fans began to consider him a bit of a one-trick pony.
