Are We Asking For It? How The Wolverine Exposes the Nature of the Fanboy

Hated the last one? Here comes a new one! Excitement!

Genre fandom is a fascinating thing to me. Nowhere in culture, outside of maybe religion, can you find such devotion and dedication to a certain thing. But even more fascinating is how quick we are to get excited over a new version of something we didn't like in the first place.

The trailer for The Wolverine has just been released (after several teasers of teasers) and the response has been pretty positive. Though not surprising at all, the reaction is still no less baffling. People think this movie looks pretty cool. I think this movie looks pretty cool. It’s got all the requisites of what makes an action trailer exciting: dramatic start, mysterious plot hints, clips of fighting, some serious-looking dudes and dudettes, and Hugh Jackman snarling. If you’re a fan of Wolverine, what more could you ask for? It’s more Wolverine!!

However, I could use that exact same description to apply to that first spin-off FOX tried to throw at us, X-Men Origins. The point is, that movie had a good trailer, too, and fans were super excited. (Don’t pretend like you weren’t- I got laughed off the internet for DARING to suggest that movie might not be good.) Well, here we are again, and I’m going to do it again: I think The Wolverine looks only slightly better, if not exactly the same as Origins did.

I’m not sure what people are seeing that makes them inclined to be assured this is a better film than what we got in 2009. It looks just as flashy, just as sleek and shiny. I’m still seeing flashes of WWII history. And for some reason, black trenchcoats are still a thing these movies need to have. For something that promises to have nothing to do with that first spin-off, I’ve very curious as to why I’m seeing Logan strapped down in another lab again, and we’re still hearing people make promises about powers and abilities.

This movie is coming from a stranger place than Origins in that Darren Aronofsky, an incredible filmmaker was at first attached to helm. He promised to do something tonally more serious, and deeper than what we had seen before. A reflection of his vision was in the very name of the film: The Wolverine, a base title that strips away all the superfluous junk, and looks to get at the core of the character. This falls right in line with the Japan/samurai storylines the movie planned to follow.

Well, Aronofsky eventually dropped out, and James Marigold came in. He’s a fine director, and I’ve enjoyed all his movies. But I could say the same about Martin Campbell, too, and look how that turned out. The issue here is, despite stealing that badass title, Marigold isn’t making the movie Aronofsky was going to make, which would be fine…if this didn’t look like more of the same…When will FOX learn?

But the bigger issue here is why are we so forgiving? Do we remember the vows we made after seeing that the first Wolverine was a steaming pile? It happened with Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer and it happened with Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance as well; “I hated the first one, but man, this one looks so much better!” Only for the end result to be: yeah, not so much. For a group as impassioned as comic book fans, its pretty remarkable how quickly we can go from condemning a movie, to turning right around with excitement for the next one.

Are we fickle or forgiving? In the case of a mediocre sequel, it doesn’t seem to be a good thing, either way.

I hope this starts the official Wolverine film franchise, without very many ties to the X-Men.

This guy also thinks Watchmen sucked because of the ending...

Am I stoked for the Wolverine? Nope. But he's also NOT even close to my favorite X-Man, so it's kind of like seeing Thor done by uhhhhhh we'll say Stephen Sommers after appearing in the movies for four films.

I expect Hugh Jackman to entertain, but at this point, even if it was in Marvel's hands - Wolverine is way too exposed. I know some will argue that we haven't yet seen "the true" Wolverine from the comics, and some would even claim that's due to not seeing his iconic suit (ha!) but it just doesn't matter anymore.

I want to see a Rogue movie. She goes a lot of places.

@ Levi

I agree but that train scene probably didn't seem as badass because its still in the editing process.

tainted87 - Rogue and Gambit = awesomne, they had a much cooler relationship than Wolverine the stalker and Jean Grey. I think they need to get rid of Jackman, I can´t say this enough. Wolverine needs to be in the X-Men again, like the first two seasons of X-Men. By himself he´s a bore and this looks no better. The X-Men work best as a team and I say lets mix it up a little, mutants with more visually interesting powers, Sentinal, the real pheonix and Apoko0lypse as villains, set in a darker dystopian future. Add Cable into the mix, then we´ll have something.

Psylocke, Wolverine, Cyclops, (the real Rogue (or maybe M as the love interest of Gambit to mix it up/much rather Rogue though) and Gambit, kitty price, and Sync (rookie) make up a team of badass, mutant fugetives in an alternate future, where Magneto lead the X-Men and killed Pro X, forcing mutants to have to register etc etc etc. Add 3d and that is an x men I´m watching. [frick] the wolverine, its going to suck and anyone who goes to watch it should be ashamed, unless they actually like that piece of crap last movie.

I still say, The Wolverine is going to be the best CBM of the year. I'm super excited for Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. I'm not less excited for them by any means and because Man of Steel is a Zack Snyder movie, it lowers my expectations. The Wolverine is different than other superhero movies in almost every way possible, it could still be a character driven movie but, it's obviously going to have violence and explosions. Don't pretty much all superhero movies? It's set in Japan, based off of a popular arc (there is obviously going to be changes, there always is), directed by James Mangold of 3:10 to Yuma. Am I missing something here? Cause, I'm still struggling to see the downside. Then again, I'm looking past X-Men Origins and hoping for a better movie.

I say ppl are hyped becasue of first class and not Orgins. I say this becasue pol are judging FOX and not the movie crew it self. So fox seemed to finally make a good X-men movie and it was actually very good, as in critcally but BO wise it was alright. My point is ppl are looking at fox and according to the Choices they have made recently such as hiring a consultant do seem to foreshadow them going in the right direction thus impacting the excitement for the wolvirine. And come on that trailer was really well done

There's a lot more wrong with Watchmen than just the ending, my friend...
anyway, a Rogue movie could be great. There's a lot of potential there. As long as its not Anna Paquin, I'm good!
