Hugh Jackman On Jean Grey's Return In THE WOLVERINE & More From The Trailer

While chatting with MTV, Jackman discusses the various elements from yesterday's big CBM trailer, The Wolverine. He talks about the exciting bullet train sequence, the character of Viper, and Jean Grey's "presence" in the film. Check it out..

We know how passionate Hugh Jackman is about the character of Wolverine, and as far back as the very first X-Men movie he has wanted to see Chris Claremont's "Japan Saga" adapted for the screen. Well thanks to James Mangold he has finally got his wish, and we will all get to see one of the most celebrated Logan arcs come to life in The Wolverine. Two trailers for the movie dropped yesterday, and were met with (mostly) positive reactions, but what of the content? We saw some very interesting teases of the mysterious Viper - who seems to have undergone a bit of a literal reptilian makeover for this film -, flashes of an awesome looking fight sequence atop Japan's Bullet Train, and most intriguingly, a glimpse of Famke Janssen as the returning Jean Grey. Will she actually play a part in the story or was that just a flashback? Hugh Jackman discusses all of the above.

On Viper:
"Viper is a badass, for someone who plays Wolverine, who is pretty badass. ... She's not your girl next door. You're going to end up kind of loving every minute she has on screen."

On the Bullet Train Sequence:
"It is insane. It was insane to shoot it. It was, again, one of those brilliant ideas. One of the most emblematic things about Japan is the bullet train. I can't go on the bullet train without any incident. It was hairy, shooting that stuff. To re-create what that is like, the kind of winds at 300 miles per hour, let me just say, looking back at some of the footage, I thought, 'It's time for a facelift.' "

On Jean Grey:
"There's no doubt that the most important relationship in his life is — we've seen through the movies — is his relationship with Jean Grey. Yes, we saw her die at the end of 'X-Men: The Last Stand,' but in this movie, she has a presence, which I think is vital to the movie, particularly for him confronting the most difficult thing within himself."

I have faith in this film. It doesn't have a lot of the problems Origins did.

- Isolation on Wolverine as the sole old character
- Completely new location
- Great looking action scenes
- Smart way to raise tension by messing with his healing powers
- Jackman looking badass angry
- All Japanese actors

We're in business

"presence" is all we get??

I wish it was more than a flashback.

the most important relationship??
If they were never a couple! lol

The trilogy events probably happened in 1 year at most, probably less. Logan and Jean had a few kisses and he killed her, thats all their relationship. But if Hugh says so, ok. :|

Huh? Jean and Logan were supposed to be in love dude..just because they never got physical doesn't mean that - for Logan at least - Jean wasn't his most important relationship in that movie universe..it's actually kinda obvious.

As Origins, yes that did also have a very good trailer I thought..but then again I didn't HATE that film anyway.

I'm really glad the The Wolverine takes place after the X-Men trilogy. Now we can move beyond The Last Stand (ugh).

Flashback/dream sequence. Nothing more. This film is looking pretty damn good though. Hope it delivers (without automatically assuming it will).

So excited for Famke Janssen's return as Jean Grey.
Even though it'll be a flashback or most likely a dream/hallucination sequence, It's so great to see her return.

As I said yesterday, this movie now has me interest somewhat. That being said, some of the scenes from the trailer felt a little too familiar...

He could be sensing her actual presence. She is called "Phoenix" after all. So she may very well be alive and telepathically reaching out to Logan. Just a thought.

I'm starting to think when Viper is ripping her face off that it was Jean she was impersonating. She's probably messing with Logan's mind.

People keep saying that the trailer for origins was good, but I guess you dont remember that the bootleg was out like three months before the Theatrical release. The trailer never mattered because alot of people had seen the movie already. Thats what hurt the movie the most. Wether the movie was good or not people already made up their minds about the movie three months before it was actually released. Even the people who liked it, didnt bother going because by time it released it was old news. The people who didnt like it had three months to express their feeling to everyone who would listen. Its one thing if a bootleg is out for a week or two before the release date, but three months can be a death sentence for any movie. Especially because it wasnt good to begin with.

i don't know why hey keep insisting with Jean and Wolverine. Its so annoying, it make Cyclops character less and less important and more stupid.

Did Wolverine ad Jean ever had a love relationship in the comicS?

"she has a presence, which I think is vital to the movie, particularly for him confronting the most difficult thing within himself."

So, either a flashback type thing revolving around Logan's ability to love again, or potentially a brink of death type thing where Logan has a vision of Jean and she helps him make the choice as to whether to finally let go and die at last, or hang on to kick/punch/violently shred some more ass in the climax (and a certain upcoming X-flick featuring Wolverine).

@thewonderer If you have seen 3:10 To Yuma, then you know that James Margold is an excellent director easily in league with any director in film including No-lan and Abrams. And the writers have done excellent work too. FOX put together some incredible talent for this film.

They keep insisting because Wolverine always loved Jean (though to be fair, he's always had a thing for red heads, particularly if they took pity on him/were married/or just really attached to the heroic, good guy leader type *cough*Heather Hudson*cough*.

And there is the fact that Jean did have an attraction toward Logan. During the Morrison New X-Men run, not too long after Scott came back from the dead and he and Jean married, she began to drift away from him as she slowly began to tap back into the Phoenix Force and learned to control it.

With their marriage on the rocks, Logan makes another play for Jean while Scott and Emma Frost begin their "psychic affair". Jean and Logan decide not to take things to the next level, and then Scott and Jean split when she discovers what had been going on with Emma. And then Jean died not too long after that. Again. But as she finally gained control of the Phoenix Force, all that really meant this time was her ascending to higher plane until she's "done cooking" and can manifest again in the future.

Sorry but did anything in that trailer look like it follows the Japan saga storyline that Miller wrote??? It looks like all they did was use the characters (and change Viper as a mutant) and the setting of the book and instead of utilizing a great story, went with a depowered Wolverine story ummmm no thanks.

Yo ScarletJack, I was thinking the same thing. There seems to be no wedding to Mariko, it looks like Shingen (was that him on that funky nail bed?) is "grateful" to Logan??? He should be trying to kill him.

I think this movie will "look" good, cinematography, costumes, lighting and what not, but it looks like its getting the First Class treatment. Wolverine in Japan in name only. The actual story is not present. At all it seems.

Damn Hugh, all that buffing up so that they/you could [frick] it up.

And I'm sorry, but that Yukio is ugly as hell. I know that girl is a Japanese model and apparently very famous and good at it, but she just looks weird to me.

ScarletJack - Miller didn't write it. And yeah, there will probably be some vast changes. But it still looks pretty damn good. Try basing your decision in the merits of the movie itself and not what your fanboy expectations are.

RobertGriffin - He also did 3:10 To Yuma and Walk The Line. But nice try attempting to discredit a director because of one movie you didn't dig. Oh, by the way, Kate and Leopold was a pretty successful romcom, and it got a pretty decent critical response. You would of been better off pointing out Knight & Day.

They're also only showing us one aspect of the storyline. The official synopsis does suggest that there is altieror motives for Shingen wanting to help Logan.

You see, I too, can tarnish a director/writers name by listing their worst work.

And how do we quantify that? I mean, the trailer looks stellar and it got as much of a positive reaction than Man of Steel and Iron Man. Iron Man 3 is my most anticipated film of the year, but The Wolverine became my second most anticipated movie pretty fast. It looks like a breeze of fresh air to make this story more personal instead of madmen trying to dominate/kill the Earth/city.

SPOILERS (from my El Guapo Coolo persona)

Jean comes back to Logan (Phoenix-hint) during his time of need (desperate moment after losing his healing ability). After some prolonged dialogue she leaves him with a "gift"

The "gift" = the return of his healing ability

Wolverine is my favorite X-Men character. I feel that pairing Wolverine with Jean made him and her better characters, but most of all, it made Scott a better character. I don't like how Scott was portrayed on the movies as much as the next guy, but Scott moving on, getting paired with Emma Frost and finally moving on again from Emma to dedicate himself only to his mutant revolution was a brilliant move that Marvel did IMO. All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men are two of the best mainstream comics on the stands right now, and they barely feature Wolverine in it. Hopefully Singer will bring back Scott and finally do the character justice in the big screen.
