Hugh Jackman Talks Darren Aronofsky's Take On THE WOLVERINE

James Mangold directed 2013's The Wolverine, even though Darren Aronofsky's was originally attached. Hugh Jackman talked about his take on the movie before being replaced, saying that it could have been rated R.

When Hugh Jackman talked with MovieFone, he brought up the original concept for The Wolverine with Darren Aronofsky in the director's chair, which would have apparently been pretty different than James Mangold's version. "Maybe I'll convince him to do a "Wolverine" movie at some point," he said. "We had a long discussion, Darren and I, as did Jim and I, about making "The Wolverine" R-rated." He elaborated on the possibility of an R rated Wolverine film, since it is very likely that Fox wouldn't approve of the idea of making a Wolverine movie restricted. "They were open to it, actually," he reveals. He goes on to say that one of the reasons the film wasn't rated R was because he didn't want to disapoint the children he meets everyday. "It didn't scare them off, as long as we have a good reason for it. I was the one to call it off. In a way, I would love to do it -- if there was ever a character that would necessitate an R-rated version. But I'm the one who, every day of my life, meets 12, 13, 14-year-olds. I see in their eyes how I used to feel about Indiana Jones. So for me to say, 'You know what, this next movie, it's not for you' -- I would have to have a really good reason for it."  He continues to talk about how they worked on the original film while not wanting to change too much of it just to avoid the R. "So we made the movie without a rating in mind, and the first cut, let me tell you, we had trouble. It was definitely R-rated. So in the end, we just snuck on the side of it, but that's why we released the unrated cut on Blu-ray." Even though many fans would love to see an R rated Wolverine film, Fox may not be up for it, since it would seriously affect it's Box Office gross. However, it is possible that Fox is building up to it either in 2017's Wolverine film or even another Wolverine movie. Old Man Logan, perhaps? Jackman talked a little bit more about an early discussion during the production of the of the film between him and Aronofsky. "But there was one thing that he said to me that I can remember. He said to me, "I don't think you've just got to be a little bit bigger. I think you've got to be fifty pounds bigger... and muscle-only." He had a really cool idea about scars. He said, "I want to see him completely scarred. I know he heals but if you think about it, we have a scar, we have a scar for life. It doesn't really get better. It might reduce over your lifetime but it also stays there." Do you think an R rated Wolverine film is a good idea? Sound off below.

I really liked what we got in the Wolverine. I haven't seen the Unrated cut but I've heard it's even better.

I honestly didn't notice much of a difference when I watched it. Granted, I hadn't seen the theatrical cut since I saw it in theaters. I got the Blu Ray a couple days ago.

That said, I thought The Wolverine was awesome. The Bullet Train scene was awesome.

The Wolverine was my second favorite CBM of 2013. Liked it a lot.

Unrated cut has three uses of the word "[frick]", more blood and an extended final battle.

Part of me is saying "Yeah, I get what you mean." and the other half is saying "[frick] the 14 year olds and give me an r-rated Wolverine film!"

I have to watch the uncut version of the Wolverine. Aronofsky would have Wolverine up for an oscar.

The Christopher mcquarie draft of the wolverine was AMAZING. It had everything you love about logan and that particular japan storyline. And Silver Samurai was actually a mutant! I can't watch the wolverine and not think about that draft.

Well, since she blabbed about it she definitely won't be getting the role now (if history prevails) :P

I really liked The Wolverine, especially the unrated cut. But that ending with the "Silver Samurai" was god damn ridiculous. I hope they don't pull some shit like that again in the 3rd one.

I don't expect them to go heavy R in the upcoming threequel. I just REALLY hope that if it does draw anything from the Old Man Logan story arc it all makes sense in how they strategize it into the story because in all honesty it didn't need to be done...especially seeing that it's supposed to take place in between the 2 years Wolvie and Yukio are traveling. I have no doubts but I'm heavily confused. lol

I was really torn by The Wolverine, and much of that had to do with the really out of place villain (Madame Hydra) and a large chunk of the third act. The film really didn't need to go bigger in order to deliver an exhilarating finale.

I wouldn't mind giving the uncut version a go however. If what Jackman claims is true, then an R-rated Deadpool or Wolverine film may not be completely off limits.

Is this it? Only read the first page, but this is intriguing.

There's plenty you can do with a PG-13 rating, and you can always go the extended/unrated Blu-Ray route. One that would NEED an R is a Weapon X movie.

I like Hugh but he's dead wrong.
Wolverine deserves the R-rated treatment. Kids can handle it,I did.
No scarring on Logan either..he heals!!!

Wolverine would have ended better with Cyclops as the mastermind behind it all. Revenge for Jean and all that. They were really laying on the Jean is dead angle, and that would have been the perfect way for it to make itself physical. Either that or have Shingen as a more prominent final battle, Wolverine using the separator to take on all Shingen's men samurai style. Would have left a lot of loose ends though.
