More From James Mangold On THE WOLVERINE

The 3:10 To Yuma director offers up a few more details on what we can expect when Logan returns to the big screen. As well as teasing the first trailer for the movie, Mangold also discusses the tone, revealing they'll be going "a little darker and a little deeper"..

From what we've already heard about The Wolverine, it seems a safe bet that when Hugh Jackman once again dons the claws and sideburns we will be seeing a completely new take on the character. Now while chatting to MTV, director James Mangold adds to that, discussing the Japanese setting and influence, how "dark" things will get and the rating of the movie, and also what wee can expect to see (or not see) in the first teaser for the film.

On the Japanese influence.

"I think there is a lot of ways that Japanese film, Japanese fighting, Japanese martial arts have had an effect on this movie. And certainly the movie is dripping with Japanese tradition both cinematically, fighting-wise and philosophically as well."

On Logan's new look and separation from the previous movies.

"We've given Logan a new haircut, a shorter haircut that I think is a more handsome haircut. The wonderful opportunity for me with this film is that 90 percent of it takes place in Japan, and even though other elements remain constant from the other pictures, namely Hugh Jackman, we kind of got our chance to reboot the tone and go a little darker and a little deeper than they've gone before with this character. That was exciting for me."

On a potential rating, the violence, and a "pissed off" Wolverine

"The whole point is not about violence or rating; it's about intensity. I wanted to make a film that in a way captures the intensity of his character. One of the things that has always been a feature of Wolverine in the comics is that he has a berserker rage, that he has anger and some of his abilities are driven by something more primal. Honestly, to get really pissed off — not cute pissed off, not quippy pissed off, not funny pissed off or cigar-chomping pissed off, just pissed off — that can then help drive the fighting, drive the combat."

Mangold also teased the first trailer for the movie, although he wouldn't say exactly when we should expect it, or what it would reveal. "For me, I'm not the marketing department of Fox, but for my own tastes, less is more." He then says that because we are already so familiar with the character, he doesn't feel they have to give away too much with the first teaser. "You have a character that's a bit of a given, you know this guy. Hugh is so good in this role. My point of view is 'save as much as you can,' but we will be lifting our skirt and offering a peek or two, certainly in the months to come."

A pissed off Wolverine means claws out, mouth open, fangs showing, veins protruding from his neck and blood gushing out his enemy. Intensity is the reason behind all of it. It needs to be R. But it won't.

Basically all he said in this interview is, "Wolverine will be cool, it won't be R, so I'm gonna make it sound violent... Violent for a PG-13 movie."

It doesn't need to be R. You can depict violence and intensity without needing to show the results of it. Granted it'll have to be a HARD pg-13, but many movies have pushed the boundaries in the past.

An R-rating really doesn't matter to me. There have been so many terrific films with PG-13 ratings that have managed to be very intense and mature. I understand that there's a certain freedom associated with an R-rating, but that sure as hell didn't make the last Punisher movie any good. A good movie is a good movie, regardless of rating. The violence shouldn't be a problem when you have a smart director who can go as far as possible without technically crossing over into true R-territory. Intensity =/= gore.

So...is he actually going to know how to fight this time or is he still going to use "gets his ass kicked for most of fight fu"? It got a little better with the later movies but dam. I remember that lady deathstrike fight where he was just getting tossed all over the room. I won't bring up the mystique fight...whoops. Origins only slighty made him look better. Juggernaut fight doesn't count cuz not many can look good fighting him.

You just can't make a Wolverine flick, thats true to the character, without an R, If you're putting up Wolverine against swarms of *HUMAN* enemies, ones that bleed when their appendages are severed.

It's the point of the character, he's not dangerous or frightening to others just because he's a really good fighter, it's because he's devastating to his enemies in such brutally violent way, without it effecting him, he'll eviscerate someone as easy as another character would throw simple punch......and he's even more dangerous because, he kind of likes it.

The only way I can see getting around an R, and showing the character as he is, is giving him either mechanical enemies, like terminator type enemies, or non-human enemies that bleed like a predator.

The way I would do it is, release a HARD PG-13 rating when it's in theaters and get the HARD R rating when comes out on blu ray.

The ratings are not just for violence though, language, behavior, and nudity always come into the picture too, growing up a lot of movies with violence and nudity had a pg rating. All depends on the times. Parents sue over there kids seeing a naked woman these days, they have to make it "R" for that reason alone.

What are you talking about? Punisher: Warzone was dope! So was GR:SoV. Sometimes you just need some ridiculousness to put into perspective the gold.

Wolverine is a character that can both dish out and endure ridiculous amounts of very nasty violence. Of course they don't need to show every little bit of it, but it couldn't hurt if they at least had the option.

Ratings are a curious thing anyways. Here in Germany movies and games get ratings that label them as appropriate from 0, 6, 12, 16 and 18 years on. And sometimes I can only shake my head about the ratings cetain movies get, especially between the 12 and 16 section.

What is with some of you people? You focus on ONE thing (the word handsome, which was used loosely), and you completely disregard everything else that was said.

I'm willing to sacrifice an R rating for the damn brown & yellow costume! True, Wolverine is R rated, and that would be ABSOULUTLY awesome to see, but it'll effect the overall success of the flim. Financially, that is.

Id love to see a more violent wolverine, I mean the guy has foot long metal claws for christ sake but we arent gonna get the ultra violence wolverine deserves. however I have really high hopes for this, Mangold has said all the right things, I just wish they wer rebooting all together with first class as the exception, ther hasnt been a good xmen movie yet (except 1st class which was half great, half ok),

Im hoping for a violent stylised japanese noir-fest
