Original Script For THE WOLVERINE Had Only One Mutant

It should be pretty obvious who that mutant is, right? Chirs McQuarrie talks more about the draft he wrote for Darren Aronofsky before James Mangold took over directing duties. Would you have preferred this route or are you looking forward to Fox's shared universe?

Fans were pretty happy with the team of McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler) being the guiding creative force behind the second solo Wolverine film. In the end, things didn't work out and James Mangold who's by no means a slouch(Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma) , stepped in. It's pretty much confirmed that Mangold has tweaked the script to at least add one mutant, The Silver Samurai and is rumored to have added a host of other X-Men in cameo roles to start building their own cinematic universe at Fox. Below, McQuarrie talks a bit about the original plans for the film.

"Well you know, it was an X-Men movie – it was a Marvel movie – but it existed very much in a real world. And more than anything, I love it for the very fact that – at least in the script I wrote – he was the only mutant in the movie… It was what you’d imagine the Wolverine universe to be under the control of somebody who wrote ‘The Usual Suspects’ and ‘The Way of the Gun’ and is a fan of Sergio Leone. It was Kurosawa’s Wolverine. There was a real romance to it, there was real humor to it, and a very straightforward sort of plain-faced brutality to it. I’m hoping they preserve that.

Hugh was really great, I liked working with Hugh a lot – he was very understanding, very open and supportive of me – so I’ll be very interested to see how that film turns out."

@brazilianbatman Umm that's what he does in the Claremont arc. I'm not going to spoil how its a fair fight since you don't know but keep in mind, he's fighting ninjas.

I almost screamed when I found out that Aronofsky had dropped out of this. I suppose now all I'm concerned with is getting a decent Wolverine flick. Please Mr. Mangold, don't [frick] this up.

@fettastic- I think my main problems with FF were (1) Jessica Alba as Sue Storm. WTF!?! (2) Galactus. What.The.F*ck.

Considering that First Class has been Fox's only not terrible movie (IMO) I'm being actually quite open minded. I still think Marvel Studios could do a better job.

One mutant sounds like a suckfest to me. Anybody who suffered through the seventies/eighties CBMs would likely agree. I'm glad Mangold took over. Seems like Fox is actually trying to learn from Avengers and their past mistakes.

@fett Nice to hear someone stick up for the FF movies. They were fun and Alba was, as you said, HOT AS [frick].

I do wish Fox would stop with the 2-second mutant cameos, mostly because it [frick]s up the universe's continuity. "Oh hey, look, it's Emma Frost. She's 17 years old in the 1980's despite the fact that she was 35 in the 1960's."

If you're going to introduce a fairly well known character, as a cameo, at least have a plan for the future.

Does FOX not understand that it's too late? They have butchered their version of a Marvel universe, the damage is irreverisble.

They've just become desperate at this point, and it shows.

That sounds awesome.. One of the biggest problems with Origins, all power display, no story.. Every three minutes you meet a new mutant, and they show off their powers, no characterization whatsoever.

Sounds really interesting. Wolverine being the only mutant wouldve worked, one of the main problems with all the previous x-men films (1st class is the only half good one) has been they have way too many characters, so 70 to 80 % of em are just pretty people playing crap, underdeveloped, uninspiring and dull characters no one gives a shizz about. A few well developed mutants and I'll be happy. Ta

So this is Fox's "Iron Man" when it comes to a unified cinematic universe.... So what? We are to expect some guy to appear and ask Logan for help tracking down a crazy mercinary that he's partly responsible for and Logan tells him to get stuffed?

To be fair, I'd probably lose my shit in the cinema if it was something that hinted at us actually geting that deadpool script made into a movie.
