UPDATED: More on What Brett Ratner Thinks of "Comic Book Geeks"

The X-Men: The Last Stand director admits he never read the comics and claims that he saved the X-Men movie franchise.

If you're a loyal CBM reader, then you were probably shocked and angered by director Brett Ratner's recent statements about how "comic book geeks" have no life and nothing better to do. Well, get ready for more, because, love him or hate him, Ratner's outspoken about his place in X-Men history.

Ratner, while promoting a DVD he made about his own "legacy" of filmmaking, said:

"You can't make these people happy. I'm kind of the Anti-Christ to these comic book geeks. Every single person that wrote shit went to see that movie multiple times because a movie doesn't gross $200 something million unless people go to see it more than once. Every single person who said, 'I'm never seeing that movie,' they were the first ones there.

"You know what it is. That's their whole life, they have nothing more to do than to worry. What are they concerned about? It's out of the filmmaker's hands. A film is a collaborative effort. How's a person sitting at home going to worry about how a movie is going to turn out to be? I just know one thing: Mine outgrossed the other two by far. Mine was the [X-Men movie] that made the most narrative sense. And I'm not knocking [Bryan Singer's] movie but he just does a certain thing; Bryan uses his brain and I use my eye and my instincts more. It's a whole different approach to making a movie. I'm not saying my movie wasn't smart; I just wasn't intellectualizing it. I was just looking at it as pure entertainment value which is what it was.

"When I was a kid and used to watch that cartoon it was just fun. It wasn't a deeper meaning for me when I watched the cartoon as a kid. I didn't read the comic books but it doesn't matter, the cartoon is the same f*cking thing.

The most ridiculous statement I've read is -- and of course I looked at the Internet after the movie came out -- that I buried the franchise. If I buried the franchise how the f*ck did they make a Wolverine? I mean, that's ridiculous. And they're making three other f*cking X-Men movies. Mine kept the franchise alive!"

Well, CBM fans, what do you think? Did Brett Ratner save the X-Men franchise? Please allow me to step aside before you start hurtling projectiles...

RATNER UPDATE 1: Has Brett Ratner been listening in to our little thread about him here at CBM? I don't know, but Ratner Tweeted this today:

ATTN COMIC BOOK FANS: THERE ARE 3 SIDES TO EVERY STORY. YOUR SIDE, MY SIDE, AND THE TRUTH. AND NO ONE IS LYING.

RATNER UPDATE 2: More from Brett on Twitter:

I will direct Youngblood which [Michael Ryan] didnt ask me about either. i was a comic book geek since i was 6 years old just not X-MEN.

Shouldn't this bloated ignoramus be making another Rush Hour flick that no one cares about? As for the future of the franchise, there's a reason why all the "new" projects are PREquels...Brett.

I actually still had high hopes going to see the movie...but was disappointed. I didn't HATE X3...was just very disappointed.

OF COURSE it made the most money. After two good films, where the sequel was better than the first, everyone was probably thinking X3 would be better than X2! He sold a bunch of tickets based on the work that the first two movies accomplished. But oh well. I really doubt he'll ever be allowed on an X-Movie again.

Looks like someone is bitter about how fans reacted. How exactly did his movie make more sense than the other two?

Man, I was a little annoyed after reading the last article, but this guy is a major squa-dousch! I followed the source link and the guy just talks about himself like he's the be all and end all. It's funny that they even mention that Russel Simmons asked him why he was hosting a DVD filmography about himself.

Another sucker of Satan's pecker. He best wipe of Bay's mess before he gets to work.

The Rat should let it go and accept his movie was not that great. It wasnt the worst movie I've seen but it was not the best in the X-Men series. I still fail to see where his movie made more sense then the other two.

Its true that some of the things that he had in his movie actually happened in the books but there really was no need to kill off some of the characters like Scott.

you hit it right on the head! there were two very successful movies already in place, of course this one made the most money. and let me add to your brilliance by saying that profits of a movie do not mean a movie is good!

You know what... i'll let you guys in on a little secret. The first time i ever saw X-3 was when i bought the trilogy for 35$ at Wal-Mart. That was it. Naturally i liked it concidering the small price i paid for it. But it's exactly how he described it. X1 and X2 was very very smart. The last one was litterally a michael bay film. No thought, just action. Now i don't know how he ever got his film making degree but last i heard a story was a story. Whether it's a comic, a play, a film or a book. IT NEEDS DEPTH!!! Ratner just admitted his didn't have any!!! And now he's saying that it's because X3 did so great that Wolverine got his own??? Riiiiiiiiight, cause it's because Superman 3 was so great that we had the fourth one right? Or better yet, Batman and Robin was sooooo FANTASTIC that they made Batman Begins!!! Yeah, that makes a shitload of sense. Now, had the first two x-films been brainless pieces of Rat-shit, no one would have even gone to see your sorry excuse for a film. You're riding on someone else's accomplishment and even calling it you're own!!! Dude, not only should you appologise, you could also say a HUGE "THANK YOU" to Singer as well as ALL US CBFANS that paid you for the shit you spoon fed us!!!

Yes, we are all jobless, friendless nobodies and our only family is good ol' Ma letting us stay in the loft rent free. We have nothing in our lives to worry about other than comics! What a prick!

I don't think he sunk the franchise, I don't think he made any more "mistakes" than most film makers of this genre. I do think he made a bad film! Simple as that. It doesn't even look good. The FX in X2 have aged better than X3, there was a serious lack of development both character and story wise and the action scenes were handled poorly!

Get over it you sad waste of flesh and bone you made a bad movie that only grossed off the success of it's predecessor (there are more than 200million people on the planet). I have much more important things going on in my life than the dribble spewing from your retarded mouth! Things I'm willing to bet that are far more serious than anything you've had to deal with you condescending f*ck-wit!

You may go now. I'm done with you.

48and2 - 9/10/2009, 12:15 PM
haha this guy is a mutant himself, though of a degenerate nature.

You know, if I were only an eye, I would say he's an incredible moviemaker - BUT WAIT, I'M NOT JUST AN EYE!

I did NOT go to see it in the theatre, mostly because of the reviews - I waited until it came out on dvd and rented it. Where as I did see X2 in the theatre, and bought X1 and X2 at $20.00 each. Then I bought this dvd when it was $7.50 at Walmart lol.

Like I said before, the movie (X3) did incredibly well because X2 got extremely great reviews and after having two sequels in a trilogy that are great movies most anybody is gonna go see the third, no matter what, out of curiosity and expectation. It probably would've done pretty well no matter who made it, thanks to Singer's previous efforts.

To those of you who were defending his earlier statements, what do you think now??

I looked up the origin of the name "Ratner".

Slavic: device used to introduce a stream of water into the body for medical or hygienic reasons, or the stream of water itself.

Modern English: Douchebag.

thwhtGuardian - 9/10/2009, 12:21 PM
Wow, I think the Webster company just decided to publish a picture of him next to the entry for the phrase "douche bag".

As some one said there is a reason why the next xmen movies are planned to be prequels... and if he takes a look at the film he made he might find out why that was. Deep down, he knows he [frick]ed up,he just misplacing that pent up rage and directing it at the audience instead of himself.

Secondly, what xmen cartoon was on when he was a kid? I know of only the 90's one, and the failed late 80's pilot, were there other cartoons?

"That's their whole life, they have nothing more to do than to worry": Bryan Singer, Kevin Smith, Sam Raimi is a "Comic Book Geeks"? were not all just living with our parents thank you knower of all stereotypes.

"Mine was the [X-Men movie] that made the most narrative sense" What because you took a large chunk from Astonishing X-Men and New X-mens Finale? And I wonder if hes getting confused with a movies good/bad narrative with having it in a non linear format?

"I didn't read the comic books but it doesn't matter, the cartoon is the same f*cking thing" I wonder what he said about the books when he was approached to make X3?

"Mine kept the franchise alive!": Just because you made a dumb but "financially" sucessfull movie doesnt mean you are the next hitchcock. And when the hell was the franchise dying between X2 & X3?? Stop the presses weve been making films wrong for years.
The guy who directed the rush hour films and red dragon has the secret everyone bow down to him!

God this man is an idiot (and he knows hes in the wrong otherwise why would he be getting to angry?)
