This March, Marvel Comics will launch an official prelude comic series to the upcoming Marvel Studios animated series, X-Men '97, ahead of its premiere on Disney+ later this year (funnily enough, March - and more specifically, March 20 - is also the rumoured release date for the show).

Written by Steve Foxe and drawn by Salva Espín, the X-Men '97 comic was created in collaboration with the showrunners and will reveal what Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Jubilee and the rest of the beloved X-Men cast have been up to in the time before their return.

As a result, we'll get a head start at all the mutant drama, shocking developments, and exciting character introductions ahead of the hotly anticipated new series.

To celebrate this title's release, acclaimed X-Men artist Russell Dauterman has been enlisted to prove a stunning new cover for the debut issue. Few artists capture the mutant team's style quite like Dauterman and this dynamic and action-packed wraparound variant cover depicts the iconic X-Men '97 team looking better than ever.

For the cover, Dauterman updated a piece of X-Men fan art he did years ago...the very piece that caught Marvel Comics' attention.

"X-Men: The Animated Series was everything to me as a kid, and sparked my love of the X-Men and comics - I wouldn’t be a comic book artist without it!" Dauterman exclaims. "This piece is based on an X-Men: The Animated Series fan art I did a decade ago - the fan art that got me hired at Marvel!"

"Now, it’s completely redone as an official cover to celebrate the new show. Absolutely thrilled to do this piece, and can’t wait for '97!"

Talking about writing the series, Foxe previously said, "There's a very good chance I wouldn't be writing comics today if not for the impact X-Men: The Animated Series had on me as a kid--heck, the voice actors from the show are still the voices I hear when I read the comics today!"

"Getting to reunite with my X-Men '92: House of XCII collaborator Salva Espín on this official prelude to X-Men '97 has felt like a bucket-list project a lifetime in the making, and Beau [DeMayo] and the rest of the '97 team gave us a fantastic runway to come up with our own original tale that feeds right into what viewers will get to experience in the new season."

Marvel Studios has a three-season plan for X-Men '97 and this will hopefully be the first of many collaborations with Marvel Comics. After all, there's a lot of fertile ground to explore with the world that began in X-Men: The Animated Series!

I will die a happy man if I can see the 90's X-Men brought to life proper. The costumes, the art-style, the dynamics, it's just perfection.

@feedonatreefrog - And all I want is the late-80s Claremont/Silvestri run on the screen. The early 90s is when I dropped X-Men. But happy that some fans are getting what they want! And, to be honest, I've been eating for 20 years. Time to let the younger folks (ie, those in their 30s, ha) have a slice.

@ClintThaHamster - Claremont/Silvestri should be all of the inspiration for live action.

Please be good.

This is one series that did not need a revival, it had a proper ending.

If it turns out good, that is great

but would suck to see the series come back bad, after a solid finale

Really would have been better to revive one of the many marvel shows that didnt get a proper end

Spiderman
Spectacular spiderman
spiderman unlimited
avengers emh
wolverine and the x men

@dracula - Spider-Man did get a proper ending if you're talking about the 90s one, it led to Unlimited.

@NinnesMBC - the 90's series ended on a cliffhanger. (finding MJ) they had another season planned but the network had a 65 episode limit.

Unlimited isnt actually connected. people only think that cause they briefly play the 90's theme in the first episode.

Only reason it was made was because by the time the network changed their minds about cancelling the 90's show, all the creators had moved onto other stuff.

@dracula - They have flashbacks to the '90s show too. But with updated designs of course.

Either way they still skipped how MJ came back.

@dracula - Never felt much like a cliffhanger, at best it's something that should've happened onscreen, said reunion once Madame Web helped him. I'll have to look up myself if it's true they had another Season planned though.

Actually I never even thought of that reason why Unlimited was connected, I read somewhere it was a continuation. Unless I got it mixed up.

Clearly I must do some digging.

Saw it earlier on Twitter, it's an awesome updated variant cover. The artist outdid himself and should feel proud.

That looks good besides Wolverine looking like he was the power of flight.

@mountainman - looks like colossus threw him lol

@Matchesz - Which is fine. Just the perspective on that cover looks odd. The “fastball special” has always been shown with the thrower in motion and Wolverine heading towards the frame and not to the side.
